One of the reasons this ended up being a strong nursing home is that it received a very impressive inspection rating. In fact, inspections turned out to be its best category. In this category, we gave it an A+. Inspection scores weigh several factors found on a nursing home's inspection reports. One key criteria we consider is the quantity and severity of deficiencies. Facilities with better grades in this category generally have very few severe deficiencies. Fortunately, although this nursing home had some minor dings on its inspection report, it had zero severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are labeled as categories G through L. This means that CMS did not deem any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient safety or health. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.

This nursing home received a favorable long-term care grade as well. We gave it one of our better scores in that category with a grade of B+. Nursing homes that excel in this category typically are well-staffed and provide extensive hands on care to patients. After looking at the amount of care provided by nurses and other staff, we then analyzed the nursing home's vaccination statistics. This facility vaccinated 95.08196 percent of its residents for pneumonia. Vaccines are critical to keeping patients out of the hospital. Clearly, this place is doing something right in this area as it also excelled at keeping its residents out of the hospital. It had only 0 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low figure.

Turning to the category of nursing care, this facility didn't perform quite as well in this area as some of the categories discussed above. Nevertheless, a grade of B- in this category is by no means a bad score. Nursing grades are heavily correlated with nurse staffing levels. This nursing home provides 0.3 hours of nursing care per resident each day. This is a lower figure than we were hoping for. Despite having low quantities of nursing care, this facility actually fared better in some of the quality measures we assessed. It scored well when it comes to avoiding pressure ulcers and major falls. We consider these areas to be reliable measures of the quality of nursing care. In many cases, the quality of nursing care is every bit as important as the quantity of hours of care offered.

The next area we analyzed is short-term care, which is this nursing home's worst category. It received an abysmal F in this category, which is obviously a bit of a disappointment. In the category of short-term care, we endeavor to assess measures of a facility's rehabilitation services. We look at a nursing home's skilled nursing services, including those performed by registered nurses and physical therapists. In this place's case, it looks like it provided less registered nurse and physical therapist hours per resident than the average facility. The last item we looked at in this area is the number of residents who were able to leave the nursing home and return to the community. We discovered that just 3.9 percent of this facility's residents were able to return home, which is well below average. The combination of these subpar statistics doomed this facility's short-term care grade.
