Facility Inspections
On top of faring well overall, this nursing home also earned a nearly flawless inspection report. Therefore, it earned one of our highest scores in that category with an A+. We take several aspects of a facility's inspection report into consideration in calculating our inspection grades. One of those factors is deficiencies. You should keep in mind that the severity of these deficiencies is usually more meaningful than the quantity of deficiencies, as some are relatively minor. While this nursing home had some minor dings on its report, it had zero severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are found in categories G, H, I, J, K and L. This tells you that CMS didn't consider any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient health or safety. A couple relatively minor deficiencies are not necessarily something to panic about.
Short-term Care Quality
This facility fared well in the category of short-term care. In fact, we gave it a score of A for that category, which turns out to be one of our better scores. In the category of short-term care, we seek to qualify indicators of a nursing home's rehabilitation services. We look at the facility's skilled nursing services, such as those performed by registered nurses and various therapists. This nursing home provides more services with physical therapists and registered nurses than most nursing homes we looked at. This is usually a favorable sign. The final statistic we looked at in this area is the number of residents who were able to leave the nursing home and return to the community. We found that it fared as well as just about any nursing home in Florida in this area with 64.9 percent of its patients returning home. With most nursing homes, fewer than half of their short-stay residents are able to return home.
Long-term Care Quality
We also awarded this nursing home a respectable score in the area of long-term care, where it received a B-. In the category of long-term care, we weigh the amount of care provided by a nursing home, as opposed to more sophisticated services. After looking at the very respectable amount of nursing care provided by this nursing home, we turned to the nursing home's vaccination records. This facility vaccinated 100 percent of its patients against pneumonia, which appears to be higher than most nursing homes. This combination proved to be effective as this place was able to keep its patients out of the hospital. In fact, it had only 1.43 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days.
Nurse Quality
The last area we rated is nursing. In that category, we gave this facility an acceptable grade of B-. This is this facility's weakest area. Nursing scores are mostly tied to the facility's nurse staffing. This nursing home provides an impressive 3.9 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Lastly, our nursing grades also factor in some quality-focused statistics. Specifically, we look at the percent of residents who sustained pressure ulcers and major falls. We look at these metrics as reliable measures of the quality of nursing care, since better care tends to reduce these problems.
