Facility Inspections
In addition to being a quality nursing home overall, this place especially excelled in the area of inspections, where it received an A. Not many facilities fared better in this area. Inspection grades are tied to pieces of information found on the a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Nursing homes that score well in this category tend to have very few deficiencies on those reports. Most importantly, these nursing homes generally do not have any severe deficiencies which are associated with risks to patient safety. This particular nursing home had just a single deficiency on its inspection report and it was not one deemed to pose a threat to patient health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Short-term Care Quality
This nursing home truly excelled in the category of short-term care, where we awarded it a grade of A-. Only a select group of facilities performed more favorably in this area. Short-term care grades are typically employed to score a nursing home's rehabilitation services. To offer highly rated rehabilitation services, facilities generally need to feature higher levels of highly skilled nursing services. These types of services include registered nurses, physical therapists, respiratory therapists and other highly skilled individuals. Fortunately, this nursing home offers both physical therapists and registered nurses. Not all facilities offer both. This nursing home performed much better in the final datapoint we considered in this category, which was the percentage of residents who were able to leave the nursing home and return home. We found that it performed as well as just about any nursing home in California in this metric with 69 percent of its patients returning home. For most facilities, fewer than half of the short-stay residents ever return home.
Long-term Care Quality
Turning to an additional strength for this nursing home, we awarded them one of our more positive scores in our long-term care category as well, with a grade of B+. When nursing homes receive this type of score in this category it is a good sign for resident care and suggests that the facility is well-staffed with nurses and aids. One of the datapoints we considered on top of nursing hours was vaccines. This nursing home provided the pneumonia vaccine to 100 percent of its residents. Vaccination is a reliable method to minimize unnecessary deaths for the aged 65 and up population. Finally, this place was able to limit hospitalizations. It had less than one hospitalization per one thousand long-term resident days, which is an impressively low number.
Nurse Quality
The final category we analyzed is nursing. This nursing home was awarded a better than average nursing score in our assessment, with a C. Although this isn't quite as impressive as many of its other grades, this is nevertheless a decent score in this category. In computing a nursing home's nursing score, we assess the amount of time nurses commit to residents and the level of licensure of the nurses. This facility provided 3.8 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, our nursing grades also factor in quality-based metrics, such as minimizing major falls. This nursing home performed admirably in this subcategory. Avoiding serious falls is usually a reliable indicator that a nursing home has quality controls in place. Many falls can be prevented if a facility offers enough nurses to assist its residents.
