Part of the reason this proved to be a decent nursing home is that it received a very favorable nursing grade. Its nursing score ended up being its best category. In this category, we awarded this nursing home a B+. Our nursing rating looks at the facility's level of nurse staffing. We look at both the levels of skill of the nurses and the number of hours spent with residents. This facility provided 0.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, we also looked at several nursing quality measures and this facility excelled in some of these areas. With less than five percent of its residents sustaining pressure ulcers, it performed as well as any nursing home the state in this category. This is generally a good indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can many times be avoided by offering better nursing care, such as having a protocol of moving residents at least once a day.

This facility was given its next highest category grade in the category of long-term care. We gave this facility a B- in this category, which is a reasonably acceptable grade. In determining our long-term care grades, we assess the personal care received by the nursing home's patients. In addition to considering the amount of care provided by aids and other staff, we looked at the number of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. This facility gave the vaccine to 100 percent of its patients, which is higher than the average nursing home. Lastly, this nursing home was also able to limit hospitalizations. In fact, it had less than one hospitalization per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low number.

This nursing home received its third best score in the area of inspections. Inspection ratings are based on a nursing home's recent government inspection reports. We gave this facility a C in this area. Our inspection ratings account for several factors included in a facility's inspection report. One key criteria we consider is the quantity and severity of deficiencies. This nursing home was assessed 3 deficiencies on its government inspection report, but we were relieved to find that none were in any of the categories labeled J through L. This indicates that the government inspectors didn't deem any of the deficiencies to place resident health or safety in immediate harm or jeopardy. At the end of the day, this inspection report certainly could have been much worse.
