Facility Inspections
We would like to point out that this nursing home's inspection grade exceeded its overall score. This facility earned a B in this category, which is one of our better grades. Inspection grades are based on many items found on the a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Places that receive favorable grades in this category typically have very few deficiencies on their reports. Most importantly, these nursing homes should not have any severe deficiencies which are associated with endangerment of patients. Although this nursing home had a few deficiencies on its inspection report, none were serious based on CMS' deficiency scale. A few minor deficiencies should not lead you to cross a nursing home off your list.
Long-term Care Quality
We also gave this nursing home a middle of the pack grade in the category of long-term care, where it received a grade of B-. Long-term care scores are based on a nursing home's volume of care. This includes a vast range of personal care services, ranging from help with activities of daily living to routine healthcare services. One of the factors we considered after nursing hours was vaccinations. Thankfully, this facility provided the pneumonia vaccination to 100 percent of its residents. This nursing home keeps its residents out of the hospital. It had only 0.03 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low figure.

Short-term Care Quality
This facility was given its third highest category score in the area of short-term care. We awarded this facility a B- in this category, which is a decent score. In computing these short-term care scores, we look at the facility's skilled nursing services, such as those performed by registered nurses, respiratory therapists, physical therapists and other types of skilled professionals. Our objective is to formulate a measure for comparing the rehabilitation services of different nursing homes. In this place's case, we were surprised to learn that it actually provides less registered nurse and physical therapist hours per patient than the typical facility. Finally, we looked at the percentage of residents who eventually returned home from this nursing home. We found that 5.5 percent of this facility's patients were able to return home. This figure was well below average.

Turning to the last area, this nursing home was awarded a decent nursing score of C. There are a number of data points included in this area. Many of these subcategories are tied to levels of nurse staffing. This place provides only 0.3 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is a somewhat discouraging figure which is well below average. Finally, we also assessed several nursing quality-based metrics. Although this place got dinged a bit for its nursing hours per resident, it actually excelled in a few of these quality-based metrics. With fewer than five percent of its residents sustaining pressure ulcers, it performed well in this metric. This is generally an indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can typically be avoided by offering better nursing care, such as having a policy of moving a patient more often.
