Facility Inspections
While this nursing home's overall grade was decent, it really excelled in the category of inspections. In fact, we awarded it a grade of A+ for that category, which is one of our best scores. Inspection ratings take several factors into consideration, including deficiencies and federal fines. You can find more information about each of these items by obtaining copies of nursing homes' inspection reports. Fortunately, although this facility had a few minor dings on its government inspection report, it had no severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are those found in categories G, H, I, J, K and L. This means CMS didn't consider any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Long-term Care Quality
This facility also performed favorably in the area of long-term care, with an impressive score of A in this category. When nursing homes receive this kind of score in long-term care it is typically a good sign for patient care and suggests that the facility is well-staffed with nurses aids. One of the criteria we considered after nursing hours was vaccinations. This facility administered the pneumonia vaccination to 99.5122 percent of its patients. This is a great way to minimize negative health outcomes for the elderly population. The last statistic we looked at was the nursing home's hospitalization rate. We found that this place had 1.9 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, which is close to average in this area.
Nurse Quality
Another strength of this nursing home is its favorable grade in nursing. We awarded them one of our better scores in that area, with an D. The nursing score includes several subcategories. The most heavily weighted one is the amount of time nurses spent with patients. With just 2.4 hours of nursing care per resident daily, this facility's nurse staffing levels were quite a bit below the national average. On top of its below average nursing hour totals, this place earned poor marks in some of the quality-based measures we considered in computing our nursing ratings. We found that more of this facility's residents suffered falls leading to major injury. We would argue that many falls could be avoided with better nursing care. This metric contributed to this nursing home receiving a poor nursing grade.
Short-term Care Quality
Switching gears to the final area, we awarded this facility a grade of D in short-term care. This was the nursing home's least impressive category score. Of course, this category hurt the facility's overall profile to a certain degree. Our short-term care scores are presumably most critical for folks in need of rehabilitation services. Rehabilitation generally utilizes higher levels of skilled nursing. This includes not merely nursing, but also physical and respiratory therapy, as well as other variations of therapy. Unfortunately, this nursing home was below average in terms of its quantity of physical therapy and registered nurse hours provided to its residents based on the measures we assessed. The last metric we looked at in this area is the number of residents who eventually returned home from the nursing home. This nursing home struggled quite a bit in this metric as well, with just 42.8 percent of its residents returning home. This was quite a bit below average.
