In calculating our short-term care grades, we scrutinize the facility's levels of highly skilled nursing services, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists occupational therapists and other highly trained professionals. This area is more often than not a solid assessment of a nursing home's rehabilitation services. One of this nursing home's strength is that it offers more hours of care from registered nurses to its residents. The last metric we considered in this area is the percentage of patients who were able to leave the nursing home and return home. We found that it performed as well as just about any facility in Illinois in this area with 67.7 percent of its patients returning home. At most nursing homes, less than half of their short-term residents return home.
Facility Inspections
This nursing home also performed well in our inspection category, which is based on its recent government inspections. We gave it an A for that area, which is one of our best scores. Inspection scores are tied to many pieces of information located in the a nursing home's inspection reports. Facilities that receive favorable grades in this category tend to have few deficiencies on those reports. Most importantly, these facilities should not have any severe deficiencies which are associated with risks to patient safety. Fortunately, although this place had a few minor dings on its government inspection report, it had zero severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are ones found in categories G, H, I, J, K and L. This tells you that CMS did not deem any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient safety or health. Lastly, our nursing grades also factor in quality-based assessments, such as avoiding major falls. This place performed better than average in this area. This is often a good indicator that a place has reliable quality controls in place. Major falls can many times be prevented if more nurses aids and better safety protocols are in place.
Long-term Care Quality
The next area we scored was long-term care. Unfortunately, we gave it a lowly F for this category, which is an abysmal score. We wouldn't necessarily dismiss a nursing home due to a single bad category though. For prospective patients in need of a permanent residence as opposed to rehabilitation, long-term care is a very important category. Once we assessed the amount of care provided by nurses and other staff, we then analyzed the nursing home's vaccination statistics. This nursing home vaccinated 98.65772 percent of its residents against pneumonia, which is more than the majority of nursing homes. To our surprise, this place was able to keep its patients out of the hospital. In fact, it had just 0.29 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days. Sadly, some of its other scores in this category were not as favorable as these.
