Facility Inspections
The main reason this ended up being a decent nursing home is that it received an excellent inspection score. Its inspection grade was far better than its overall grade. In the inspections category, we gave this facility a grade of A-. Perhaps the most critical factor we look at in computing our inspection grades is deficiencies. These deficiencies can be found on a facility's recent inspection reports. Nursing homes with higher grades in this category typically dodged the most severe deficiencies involving patient abuse or death. While this place had a few minor dings on its report, it had no severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are ones found in categories G through L. This tells you that the inspectors didn't deem any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient health or safety. The fact that the deficiencies were relatively minor made us feel better about this inspection report.
Short-term Care Quality
This nursing home also was awarded a strong grade in our short-term care category. We awarded this facility an above average grade of B+ in this category. Our short-term care grade is generally used to assess a nursing home's performance with rehabilitation. In order to offer high-end rehabilitation services, nursing homes generally need to feature higher levels of skilled nursing services. These types of services include registered nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists and other licensed professionals. One reason for this place's strong score in short-term care is that it provides a significantly greater volume of hours of physical therapy to its patients than the typical facility. The last statistic we looked at in this area is the number of patients who were able to leave the nursing home and return home. This facility was above average in this area with 52.8 percent of its residents returning home.
Nurse Quality
This nursing home's nursing grade appears to be one of its better features. The facility received a grade of B- in this category. In calculating our nursing scores, we analyze both nursing hours and the skill levels of the nurses. Based on the data, it looks like this place provides an impressive 3.9 hours per resident daily. This is more nursing care than most nursing homes offer. In determining our grades, we apply more weight to hours performed by more highly trained nurses such as registered or licensed nurses. Lastly, our nursing grades also factor in quality-based measures, such as avoiding major falls. This nursing home performed admirably in this subcategory. Avoiding serious falls is typically a reliable indicator that a nursing home has quality controls in place. Many falls can be prevented if a nursing home offers enough nurses aids to assist its patients.
Long-term Care Quality
The final category we scored is long-term care. We awarded it a grade of C in this category. This is a decent grade in this area. Our long-term care grade is used to grade a nursing home's performance as a traditional convalescent home, as opposed to focusing more on the skilled nursing services offered by a skilled nursing facility. On top of providing quality levels of nursing care and other staffing, this nursing home provided the pneumonia vaccine to 100 percent of its residents. This statistic is higher than most nursing homes. Lastly, we looked at the nursing home's number of hospitalizations. We found that this facility had 2.74 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days. Unfortunately, this figure was less favorable than its other scores in this category.
