Long-term Care Quality
To go along with its strong overall grade, we awarded this nursing home a grade of A+ for our long-term care grade. When nursing homes receive this kind of grade in this category it is usually a good sign for resident care and indicates that the place is well-staffed with nurses and aids. In addition to providing very impressive levels of nurse staffing, this facility administered the pneumonia vaccine to 99.13043 percent of its residents. This statistic is also far better than the majority of nursing homes. The last datapoint we looked at is the facility's hospitalization rate. Here we found that this nursing home had 2.39 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days.
Facility Inspections
In addition, this facility also performed well in inspections, which is based on the facility's recent inspections. In fact, we awarded it a grade of A+ for that area. Inspection scores weigh a host of factors included in a nursing home's inspection reports. One of the most important criteria we consider is the quantity and severity of deficiencies. Places with better scores in this area usually have very few severe deficiencies. This nursing home received 7 deficiencies on its inspection report, but we were relieved to see that none were considered to be severe deficiencies. This indicates that the inspectors didn't consider any of these deficiencies to create an imminent risk to resident health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Nurse Quality
Turning to the area of nursing care, this was not one of this facility's strong suits. We awarded it a grade of D in this category. Clearly, this facility performed much better in the categories discussed above. Our nursing grade is mostly associated with a nursing home's nurse staffing. According to CMS records, this facility averaged 4.3 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This was actually above the national average. Keep in mind, however, that when we compute our nursing scores, we apply more weight to hours performed by nurses with a higher level of skill. Lastly, we also factored in some quality-based measures in this category. This facility fared well in some of the quality-based metrics we assessed. For example, in terms of the percentage of its residents suffering from pressure ulcers, this place performed better than the national average. This is generally an indicator that a nursing home has reliable quality controls in place. Pressure ulcers can typically be prevented with better nursing care.
Short-term Care Quality
The next category we rated is short-term care. Unfortunately, we gave it an abysmal F for this category, which is a very poor grade. You shouldn't necessarily disqualify a facility due to one terrible grade though. Short-term care scores are based in part on a nursing home's quantity of highly-skilled skilled healthcare professionals. This means a broad scope of nursing services, spanning from registered nurses to physical and occupational therapists, not to mention other forms of therapy. In this nursing home's case, we found that it provides less registered nurse hours per resident than the average facility. The final statistic we considered in this area is the number of patients who were able to leave the facility and return to the community. We discovered that just 24.5 percent of this facility's patients were able to return home, which is well below average. This statistic was damning for this facility's short-term care grade.
