Facility Inspections
In addition to being a great overall grade, this facility also received A+ health inspections in recent years. Its inspections were virtually flawless. Inspection scores are based on many pieces of information found on the a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Places that receive favorable grades in this area have very few deficiencies on those reports. Most importantly, these nursing homes should not have any severe deficiencies which are associated with endangerment of patients. Unfortunately, it doesn't appear that we have deficiency counts for this nursing home. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Long-term Care Quality
This facility also was awarded a dominant long-term care grade. This actually is this nursing home's second best category score. In that category, we awarded this facility a grade of A. When nursing homes receive a grade in this range in this category it generally means it has plenty of staff and is a quality place to live on a permanent basis. In addition to considering the amount of care provided by aids and other staff, we looked at the number of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This facility provided the vaccine to 100 percent of its residents, which is significantly higher than the average nursing home. Lastly, this nursing home was able to limit hospitalizations. Indeed, it had less than one hospitalization per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low number.
Nurse Quality
In addition, this facility also received favorable nursing grades this year. In fact, we awarded them one of our better scores in that area, with a grade of B. There are a host of datapoints included in this grade. Most of these subcategories are tied to the quantity and quality of nurse staffing. This nursing home provides 3.9 hours of nursing care per patient each day. This is better than what is offered by most facilities. Finally, this facility also performed well in several of the quality measures we assessed. By way of illustration, in terms of the number of its residents suffering from pressure ulcers, this place performed better than the national average. This is usually an indicator that a facility has reliable quality controls. Pressure ulcers can many times be avoided with better nursing care and having a policy of regularly turning residents to avoid bed sores.
Short-term Care Quality
The next category we looked at is short-term care, where this nursing home was given a B. This actually is this facility's least impressive area. A facility is doing something right when their lowest score still is better than most nursing homes. Our short-term care grade is often employed to measure a facility's performance with rehabilitation. To offer good rehabilitation services, nursing homes generally must have better levels of highly skilled nursing. Skilled nursing includes registered nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists and other licensed professionals. Fortunately, this nursing home offers both physical therapists and registered nurses. Not all facilities offer both. Finally, we looked at the percentage of residents who were able to return to the community from this facility. This place performed decently in this area, with 47.7 percent of its residents returning home.
