One of the reasons this place is a quality facility is that it received an impressive inspection rating. Inspections is its best category. In that category, we awarded it an A. We weigh several aspects of a nursing home's inspection report in computing our inspection grades. One key factor is deficiencies. It should be noted that the severity of these deficiencies is usually more important than the quantity of deficiencies, as some can be quite insignificant. This facility received 4 deficiencies on its inspection report, but we were relieved to see that none were considered to be severe deficiencies. This indicates that the inspectors didn't consider any of these deficiencies to cause an imminent risk to patient health or safety. We should note that deficiency-free inspection reports are rare in the industry.

We also gave this nursing home a grade of A- for our short-term care score. In the category of short-term care, we attempt to assess measures of a facility's rehabilitation. We analyze the facility's skilled nursing services, including those performed by registered nurses and various therapists. We were pleased to find that this nursing home employs both registered nurses and physical therapists. The same can't be said for all nursing homes. The last statistic we assessed in this area is the percentage of residents who were able to leave the facility and return to the community. We found that it fared as well as just about any facility in Texas in this area with 60 percent of its residents returning home. At most nursing homes, fewer than half of their short-stay residents are able to return home.

This facility also was awarded an impressive long-term care score. In fact, we awarded it an above average score of B in this category. Facilities that receive this type of grade in this category tend to provide consistent around the clock care to make sure patients are well cared for. After assessing the amount of care provided by aids and other staff, we turned to the nursing home's vaccination records. This nursing home vaccinated 98.169334 percent of its residents against pneumonia, which is much higher than the vast majority of nursing homes. This facility also keeps its residents out of the hospital. While it had 1.8 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, its risk adjusted statistic was better than the majority of nursing homes since it had more complicated patients.

Switching gears to the next category, this nursing home received a highly favorable nursing score. This facility did not prove to have any weak areas. We scrutinized the levels of nurses working for the facility, in addition to the quantity of hours the nurses spent with residents, in calculating our grade in this area. This facility provided 3.8 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Lastly, we also looked at certain nursing quality-based metrics in computing our nursing grades. These include minimizing residents' pressure ulcers and major falls. We view these areas as good indicators of the caliber of nursing care provided, since better care tends to reduce these problems.
