One of the reasons this turned out to be a great nursing home is that it earned a very impressive short-term care grade. In that area, we awarded this facility an A. In our short-term care assessment, we try to craft a sound gauge for rehabilitation. In this process, we assess the facility's offerings of skilled nursing services, including both registered nurses and physical therapy, as well as speech therapy. This facility excelled in the two key staffing areas we looked at. It offered more care from physical therapists and registered nurses than the average nursing home. This is generally an excellent sign. Finally, we looked at the number of patients who eventually returned home from this facility. In addition to excelling in the area of physical therapy, we found that it fared as well as just about any facility in the country with 63.7 percent of its residents returning home.

One of the other reasons we rated this facility so highly is that it received a very impressive nursing score. This turned out to be its second best category grade. In that category, we gave this nursing home a grade of A. Nursing ratings are tied to quantity of nursing care available. This place provides an incredible 5.5 hours of nursing care per patient per day. Out of that total, many of those hours were provided by registered nurses, which is one of the more highly trained levels of nurses. On top of providing impressive levels of care, this place also performed well in several of the quality-based metrics we looked at. In terms of the number of its residents suffering falls resulting in major injury, this facility performed as well as any facility the nation.

In addition, this nursing home also earned a nearly flawless government inspection report. As a result, it earned one of our best grades in that category with an A-. Arguably the most significant factor we look at in determining our inspection ratings is deficiencies. Deficiencies can be found on a facility's inspection reports. Places with higher scores in this area typically dodged the most severe deficiencies involving health risks or even death. Fortunately, although this nursing home had some minor dings on its report, it had zero severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are labeled as categories G, H, I, J, K and L. This tells you the inspectors didn't deem any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient safety or health. The fact that the deficiencies were relatively minor leaves us less concerned with this inspection report.

The final area we analyzed was long-term care, in which this nursing home was awarded a C. This actually turned out to be this facility's least impressive category. This is still not a terrible score. For long-term care residents, the primary goal is to keep patients as healthy and safe as possible. This is different than skilled nursing or short-term care where the goal is to rehabilitate patients. After assessing the volume of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we next considered the nursing home's vaccination statistics. This facility vaccinated 93.333336 percent of its residents for pneumonia, which is a bit lower than we expected but still a reasonably acceptable figure. Nevertheless, this nursing home was able to keep its patients out of the hospital. It had only 0.75 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low number.
