Facility Inspections
To go along with its strong overall grade, we awarded this nursing home a grade of A+ for our inspections rating. Our inspection grades are tied to datapoints located in the a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Facilities that score well in this category have very few deficiencies on their reports. Most importantly, these places should not have any severe deficiencies which are associated with endangerment of patients. This facility received 7 deficiencies on its inspection report, but fortunately none were considered severe. This means that the inspectors didn't consider any of the deficiencies an immediate threat to resident health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Long-term Care Quality
We also wanted to emphasize the fact that this facility was given a high-end grade of A- in our long-term care area. Nursing homes that receive this kind of grade in long-term care tend to provide consistent 24/7 care to make sure residents are kept in good health. On top of looking at the volume of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we also looked at the number of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. This facility gave the vaccine to 100 percent of its patients, which is an impressive figure. Pneumonia tragically can be a deadly illness for nursing home residents so we prefer when a nursing home does not roll the dice on this issue. Lastly, this place was able to limit hospitalizations. In fact, it had less than one hospitalization per one thousand long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low number.

Short-term Care Quality
The next area we assessed was short-term care. Contributing to its high-end profile, this nursing home also performed well in that area. In fact, we gave it a of A- in that category. In the area of short-term care, we try to qualify indicators of a facility's rehabilitation services. We assess a nursing home's skilled nursing services, such as the ones performed by registered nurses and various therapists. Fortunately, it appear that this nursing home has registered nurses on staff. Not every nursing home employs these types of nurses. However, based on the information this nursing home provided, it does not look like the facility employs physical therapists. Lastly, we considered the percentage of patients who were able to return to the community from this facility. We found that 5.7 percent of this nursing home's patients returned home.
Nurse Quality
The final category we graded was nursing. We gave this nursing home one of our more favorable scores in that category, with a grade of B. While this was not as strong as many of this nursing home's other grades, it is nevertheless a fine score. Our nursing score is mostly based on a facility's nurse staffing. This nursing home provides 0.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, we also looked at several nursing quality measures and this place excelled in some of these areas. With less than five percent of its residents sustaining pressure ulcers, it performed as well as any place Indiana in this category. This is generally a good indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can often be prevented by offering better nursing care, such as by employing a protocol of turning a resident more often.
