Facility Inspections
We also wanted to emphasize that this nursing home has received near flawless health inspections recently. We awarded them an A+ in this area. Inspection scores weigh several factors included in a nursing home's inspection report. One key criteria we look at is the number and severity of deficiencies. Facilities with better scores in this area tend to have very few of these severe deficiencies. This particular nursing home had just a single deficiency on its inspection report and it was not one deemed to pose a threat to patient health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Long-term Care Quality
This nursing home also received a impressive long-term care score. In fact, this turned out to be this facility's second strongest category score. In that area, we awarded this facility a grade of A. When nursing homes receive a score in this range in this category it generally means it has plenty of staff and is an overall good place to reside on a permanent basis. On top of assessing the well above average quantity of care provided by aids and other staff at this facility, we also were happy with the facility's vaccination statistics. For example, this facility provided the pneumonia vaccine to 100 percent of its residents, which is what we like to see. Finally, this place was able to limit hospitalizations. Indeed, it had less than one hospitalization per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low number.
Short-term Care Quality
This facility also was given a high-end short-term care grade. This actually is this facility's third most impressive category score. In that area, we awarded this facility a score of A-. Our short-term care scores are presumably most critical for folks needing rehabilitation from their nursing home. Rehabilitation usually requires more highly-skilled nursing services. This includes not only nursing, but also physical and speech therapy, as well as other forms of therapy. We were pleased to find that this nursing home employs both registered nurses and physical therapists. The same can't be said for all nursing homes. The last datapoint we assessed in this area is the number of residents who ultimately were able to return home from the nursing home. It performed as well as just about any nursing home in Pennsylvania in this area with 61.4 percent of its residents returning home. For most nursing homes, fewer than half of their short-stay residents are able to return home.
Nurse Quality
In the last category, we awarded this nursing home an A+ for its nursing rating. This completed an elite report card. Our nursing score is based on the nursing home's nurse staffing levels. We factor in both the levels of skill of the nurses as well as the amount of time spent with patients. This nursing home provides an incredible 4.3 hours of nursing care per resident daily. This is much better than what is provided by most places. Lastly, this nursing home also excelled in the quality-based metrics we assessed. For example, it fared as well as any nursing home Pennsylvania in terms of avoiding pressure ulcers and major falls. We look at these statistics as good measures of the caliber of nursing care being provided.
