Facility Inspections
In addition to performing well overall, this facility also earned nearly flawless government inspections. As a result, it earned one of our highest grades in that category with a grade of A+. We take several aspects of a facility's inspection report into consideration in computing our inspection scores. One critical factor is health deficiencies. You should keep in mind that the severity of deficiencies is usually more meaningful than the quantity of deficiencies, as some deficiencies are relatively minor. While this place had some deficiencies on its report, none of them were serious based on CMS' scale. The fact that none of the deficiencies were severe made us feel better about this inspection report.
Short-term Care Quality
This facility received elite marks in the area of short-term care. As a result, it was given one of our best scores in that area with a score of A+. In our short-term care grade, we seek to forge a meaningful gauge for rehabilitation. In doing so, we look at a facility's levels of highly-skilled nursing services, including both registered nurses and physical therapy, as well as occupational therapy. This nursing home provides more services with physical therapists and registered nurses than most facilities we looked at. This is an excellent sign. The last datapoint we assessed in this area is the number of patients who returned home from the nursing home. We found that it fared as well as just about any facility in North Carolina in this area with 56.5 percent of its residents returning home. Unfortunately, at most nursing homes, fewer than half of their short-stay residents are able to return home.
Nurse Quality
To complement its strong performance in other areas, we awarded this nursing home a grade of A+ for our inspections rating. The nursing score weighs a handful of datapoints, many of which are associated with levels of nurse staffing. This particular nursing home provided 5.9 hours of nursing care per resident on a daily basis. This was one of the highest totals we found. In addition, we found that a significant percentage of this care was provided by registered nurses, which are highly skilled nurses. These are both really impressive figures. On top of providing high levels of care, this place also performed well in several of the quality-based metrics we assessed. For example, in terms of the number of its patients suffering falls leading to serious injury, this nursing home performed as well as any facility North Carolina. Preventing serious falls is typically a good indicator that a facility has reliable quality controls in place. Major falls can generally be avoided if more nurses and better safety protocols are employed.
Long-term Care Quality
The last area we looked at was nursing, was this facility's worst category. We awarded this facility a grade of D in that category. This is one of just a few dings of a very solid report card. If you are looking for anything other than short-term rehabilitation, you should take a close look at each facility's long-term care scores. After assessing nursing hours and other staffing provided by this nursing home, we then analyzed the facility's vaccination records. With a long-term care grade in this range, it is surprising to learn that this facility performed reasonably well both of these subcategories. In fact, this facility vaccinated 98.4375 percent of its patients for pneumonia, which appears to be higher than many nursing homes. Surprisingly, this place also fared well at keeping its patients out of the hospital. Indeed, it had just 0 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days. Sadly, some of its other scores in this category were not as favorable as these.
