Nurse Quality
In addition to receiving a great overall grade, this nursing home received an A+ for nursing. When calculating our nursing grades, we analyze both nursing hours and the levels of licensure of the nurses. This place provided 4.5 hours of nursing care per patient on a daily basis, which is among the highest figures in the country. A significant portion of those hours were provided by registered nurses, which are one of the most highly skilled levels of nurses. We were really impressed by both of these statistics. On top of providing high levels of care, this nursing home also excelled in several of the quality-based metrics we looked at. With under five percent of its patients suffering from pressure ulcers, it performed as well as any facility the country in this category.
Short-term Care Quality
On the list of its many elite scores, this facility received a top-shelf short-term care score. In fact, we awarded it a grade of A in this category. Short-term care scores are based on a nursing home's quantity of highly-skilled nursing services. This means a wide spectrum of nursing services, ranging from registered nurses to physical and speech therapists, not to mention other types of therapy. When we assessed this facility's nursing hours, we found it offered more care from registered nurses than most nursing homes. The last metric we looked at in this category is the percentage of residents who were able to leave the nursing home and return home. It fared as well as just about any facility in Michigan in this area with 63.3 percent of its patients returning home. Unfortunately, at most nursing homes, fewer than half of their short-stay patients are able to return home.
Facility Inspections
This nursing home also received excellent inspections in recent years. We gave it one of our best scores in that category, with an A-. We weigh several aspects of a nursing home's inspection report in determining these inspection grades. One of those factors is deficiencies. You should keep in mind that the severity of the deficiencies is usually more meaningful than the number of deficiencies, as some deficiencies can be quite minor. This nursing home was hit with 6 deficiencies on its inspection report, but we were relieved to see that none of the deficiencies were considered to be severe deficiencies. This indicates that the government inspectors didn't consider any of these deficiencies to be an imminent risk to patient safety or health. The fact that the deficiencies were relatively minor made us feel better about this inspection report.
Long-term Care Quality
The final area we graded was long-term care, where this nursing home was given a C. While this ended up being its lowest category rating, this is still not a poor grade. In the area of long-term care, we assess the amount of care provided by a nursing home, rather than more healthcare-oriented services. After assessing the impressive nursing care provided by this nursing home, we then analyzed the facility's vaccination records. This facility vaccinated 97.368416 percent of its residents for pneumonia, which appears to be higher than many nursing homes. This combination proved to be effective as this facility also excelled at keeping its residents out of the hospital. It had less than one hospitalization per one thousand long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low number.
