Facility Inspections
This nursing home earned a solid overall grade as described above, but we really wanted to emphasize its excellent health inspections in recent years. We awarded them an A- in this category. Inspection ratings account for a host of factors included in a facility's inspection reports. One of the most important criteria we weigh heavily is the quantity and severity of deficiencies. Facilities with better scores in this area usually have few of these severe deficiencies. Fortunately, although this place had some minor dings on its government inspection report, it had zero severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are ones found in categories G through L. This means that the government inspectors didn't consider any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient safety or health. The fact that none of the deficiencies were severe leaves us less concerned with this inspection report.
Long-term Care Quality
Additionally, we awarded this nursing home a grade of B+ in our long-term care category. This happens to be one of our more favorable grades. Nursing homes that excel in long-term care typically provide patients with better supervision and stay on top of routine medical care. Once we looked at the quantity of care provided by aids and other staff, we next considered the nursing home's vaccination data. This facility vaccinated 100 percent of its patients for pneumonia, which is far higher than the vast majority of nursing homes. The last datapoint we assessed was the nursing home's hospitalization rate. We found that this facility had 3.09 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days. Although this wasn't as favorable as most of its other scores in this category, this statistic can be skewed for some facilities due to the medical complexity of residents.
Nurse Quality
This facility's next best category was its nursing grade, where it received a grade of B-. Our nursing category assesses quite a few factors, many of which are associated with nursing hours. This nursing home averages 3.7 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Lastly, we also looked at several nursing quality-based metrics and this nursing home excelled in some of these subcategories. With less than five percent of its patients sustaining pressure ulcers, it fared very well in this subcategory.
Short-term Care Quality
The last area we looked at is short-term care, which turned out to be this facility's weakest area. We gave this facility a grade of D in this area. Naturally, this score hurt the facility's overall grade to a certain degree. Short-term care grades are typically employed to judge a facility's rehabilitation services. In order to have high-end rehabilitation services, nursing homes generally need to have higher levels of skilled nursing. Skilled nursing includes registered nurses, physical therapists, speech therapists and other highly skilled individuals. We found that this facility was below average in one of the two key staffing areas we looked at. It offered fewer registered nurse hours per resident than most other nursing homes. The last measure we assessed in this area is the number of residents who ultimately returned home from the facility. This facility struggled quite a bit in this area, with just 20.4 percent of its residents returning home. Unfortunately, this was well below the national average.
