Short-term Care Quality
On top of faring well in its overall grade, this nursing home received high marks for short-term care as well. It received our highest score in that category with an A+. In the area of short-term care, we attempt to qualify indicators of a nursing home's rehabilitation services. We analyze a nursing home's skilled nursing services, such as the ones performed by registered nurses and physical and occupational therapists. Fortunately, it looks like this nursing home has registered nurses on staff. Not all facilities employs these skilled professionals. However, according to the information this nursing home provided, they do not appear to employ physical therapists. The final datapoint we looked at in this category is the number of residents who who were able to eventually return home from the nursing home. We found that 6.9 percent of this nursing home's patients returned home as opposed to remaining at the facility on a permanent basis.
Long-term Care Quality
This facility also received a dominant long-term care score. In fact, this turned out to be this facility's second best category score. In that area, we gave this facility a grade of A. Nursing homes that excel in long-term care tend to be well-staffed and offer extensive hands on care to residents. In addition to assessing the volume of care provided by aids and other staff, we looked at the number of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This nursing home administered the vaccine to 100 percent of its residents. Vaccines are critical to keeping residents healthy. Clearly, this place is doing something right in this area as it was able to keep its residents out of the hospital. In fact, it had less than one hospitalization per one thousand long-term resident days, which is an impressively low number.

Facility Inspections
Adding to this facility's impressive resume, we awarded this nursing home a grade of A for our inspections rating. Inspection ratings weigh several factors found on a nursing home's inspection report. One of the most important criteria we rely on is the number and severity of deficiencies. Places with better grades in this area typically have very few of these severe deficiencies. Although this nursing home had a few deficiencies on its report, none of them were severe based on CMS' deficiency scale. We should note that deficiency-free inspection reports are uncommon in the industry.
Nurse Quality
The last category we rated is nursing, where this facility received a B+. This completed a very favorable report card. Few facilities received a B+ or better in in each area we assessed. When computing our nursing ratings, we factor in both nursing hours and the levels of licensure of those nurses. This particular nursing home provided 0.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Lastly, we also looked at certain nursing quality-based metrics in computing our nursing grades. These include minimizing residents' pressure ulcers and major falls. We look at these areas as predictive indicators of the caliber of nursing care provided, since better care tends to reduce these problems.
