In addition to earning a strong overall rating, this facility fared even better in the area of inspections which is based on the facility's recent inspection reports. In fact, we gave it an A+ for this category, which is one of our best scores. Inspection ratings are tied to many datapoints located in the a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Facilities that receive favorable grades in this category have few deficiencies on those reports. Most importantly, these nursing homes should not have any severe deficiencies which are associated with risks to patient safety. Fortunately, although this facility had some minor dings on its government inspection report, it had zero severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are found in categories G, H, I, J, K and L. This tells you CMS did not consider any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.

This nursing home was awarded impressive marks in the category of long-term care as well. Indeed, it received one of our most favorable grades in that category with a score of A-. In a long-term care setting, the facility's primary objective is to maintain residents' quality of life and keep them safe. On top of looking at the volume of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we also looked at the number of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. This facility gave the vaccine to 85.14286 percent of its residents. This is a few points lower than we expected. Clearly, this facility is doing something right in this area as it was able to keep its residents out of the hospital. Indeed, it had only 0.01 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low figure.

This facility's next best category grade came in the area of nursing. In that category, we gave this nursing home a grade of B-. This wasn't quite on par with some of its other category grades mentioned above. Our nursing score is based on numerous subcategories. The most heavily weighted one is the amount of time nurses spend with patients. This nursing home provides 0.3 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is a much lower figure than we are used to seeing. Finally, our nursing ratings also consider quality-based metrics, such as preventing major falls. Despite not having the most impressive total nursing hours, this place performed admirably in the area of preventing major falls. This is generally a good indicator that a nursing home has quality controls in place. Some falls could be avoided if a nursing home supplies enough nurses to assist its patients.

The next category we looked at was short-term care. We awarded this facility a grade of C in this category. Our short-term care ratings are thought to be more critical for folks in need of rehabilitation services. Rehabilitation usually utilizes additional highly-skilled nursing services. Skilled nursing means not only nursing services, but also physical and occupational therapy, as well as other variations of therapy. It does not appear that this nursing home provided information about its staffing of registered nurses or physical therapists. The final item we considered in this area is the number of patients that who were able to eventually return home from the nursing home. We found that just 4.8 percent of this facility's patients returned home.
