Facility Inspections
While we were not very complementary of this nursing home's overall score, it received a very impressive inspection report this year. In fact, it received an excellent inspection report this year. As a result, it received one of our best grades in that category with an A. Perhaps the most important factor we consider in computing our inspection grades is deficiencies. Deficiencies are found on a nursing home's inspection reports. It is generally best to avoid nursing homes that had a long list of severe deficiencies. Fortunately, although this nursing home had some minor dings on its government inspection report, it had zero severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are labeled as categories G through L. This tells you the inspectors didn't consider any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient health or safety. A few minor deficiencies are not the end of the world.
Long-term Care Quality
We gave this facility just a D for our long-term care rating and that actually wound up as its next most respectable category. For residents looking for a permanent residence as opposed to rehabilitation, long-term care grades are very important. On top of assessing the quantity of care provided by aids and other staff, we looked at the percentage of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. Thankfully, this nursing home gave the vaccine to 99.433426 percent of its patients, which is a very solid total. We were far less impressed with the nursing home's hospitalization rate. Here we found that this nursing home had 4.2 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, which is more than double the national average. This is definitely a concerning statistic.
Nurse Quality
Unfortunately, we gave this facility an F for its nursing grade. We weighed the qualifications of nurses employed by the nursing home, as well as the quantity of time the nurses worked with patients, in calculating our grade in this category. This nursing home averages 3.5 hours of nursing care per resident per day, which is below the national average. This place also had terrible marks in several of the quality-based measures to go along with its low nursing hour totals. We looked at the percentage of residents experiencing pressure ulcers. This nursing home was at more than double the national average in this statistic.
Short-term Care Quality
The last area we assessed was short-term care, where this facility received an abysmal grade in this category also. It received a lowly F for this area, which is definitely a major disappointment. Our short-term care ratings are likely more meaningful for individuals in need of rehabilitation services. Rehabilitation typically utilizes higher levels of highly-skilled nursing services. Skilled nursing means not just nursing services, but also physical and respiratory therapy, as well as other forms of therapy. Based on its score in this category, we were not stunned to learn that this place was well below average in terms of its quantity of physical therapy and registered nurse hours provided to its patients based on the figures we looked at. The last measure we looked at in this area is the percentage of patients who returned home from the facility. This facility struggled quite a bit in this metric as well, with just 19.5 percent of its patients returning home. Unfortunately, this was quite a bit below the national average.
