Facility Inspections
While we were fairly low on this facility overall, we awarded it a grade of A- for our inspections rating. This score is far more impressive than the nursing home's overall score. We take several aspects of a facility's inspection report into consideration in calculating these inspection ratings. One key factor is health deficiencies. It should be noted that the severity of deficiencies is arguably more meaningful than the number of deficiencies, as some of these can be quite minor. Amazingly, this was one of the few nursing homes in the country that had no deficiencies whatsoever on its inspection report. This is very impressive. Not having any deficiencies proved to be this facility's best achievement.
Short-term Care Quality
We also gave this nursing home a middle of the road grade in the category of short-term care, where it received a grade of B-. In calculating these short-term care scores, we assess the facility's skilled nursing services, including those performed by registered nurses, speech therapists, physical therapists and other types of therapists. The purpose is to devise a measure for sizing up the rehabilitation services of different facilities. Unfortunately, we found that this place provided fewer physical therapist and registered nurse hours per resident than most other nursing homes. Finally, we considered the number of patients that were able to return home from this facility. We found that 5.4 percent of this facility's patients were able to return home. This figure was well below average.

Nurse Quality
We also wanted to point out that this nursing home received an F for its nursing grade. Nursing ratings are heavily correlated with levels of nurse staffing. This facility averaged only 0.4 hours of nursing care per patient on a daily basis. Lastly, we also assessed some nursing quality-based metrics in calculating our nursing ratings. This place fared well in terms of avoiding pressure ulcers and major falls.
Long-term Care Quality
The final area we analyzed was long-term care. This nursing home was given a very poor grade of F in this area. In a long-term care environment, the nursing home's primary goal is to keep patients healthy and safe. This is different than skilled nursing or short-term care where the goal is to rehabilitate residents. In addition to assessing the amount of care provided by nurses and other staff, we looked at the percentage of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This facility vaccinated 100 percent of its residents, which is better than the vast majority of nursing homes. To our surprise, this facility was able to limit hospitalizations. With just 0.01 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, this nursing home had less hospitalizations than the average nursing home. Unfortunately, some of its other scores in this category weren't as favorable as these.
