Facility Inspections

Grade: A-plus

To go along with its strong overall grade, we awarded this nursing home a grade of A+ for our inspections rating. We take several aspects of a facility's inspection report into consideration in computing these inspection scores. One key factor is health deficiencies. It should be noted that the severity of these deficiencies is arguably more important than the number of deficiencies, as some of these can be quite insignificant. Fortunately, although this nursing home had a few minor dings on its inspection report, it had no severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are ones labeled as categories G, H, I, J, K and L. This tells you the inspectors did not deem any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient health or safety. A few relatively minor deficiencies are not necessarily something to panic about.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: B-plus

In addition, this nursing home also was awarded favorable short-term care grades this year. In fact, we gave it one of our more favorable grades in that area, with a grade of B+. In calculating these short-term care grades, we assess the nursing home's skilled nursing services, such as those performed by registered nurses, speech therapists, physical therapists and other types of therapists. The objective is to devise a tool for comparing the rehabilitation services of nursing homes. We were not able to find information about this nursing home's registered nurse or physical therapy staffing. The last item we assessed in this area is the number of residents that returned home from the nursing home. We found that 5.8 percent of this nursing home's residents returned home as opposed to remaining at the nursing home on a permanent basis.

Nurse Quality

Grade: C

The next highest grade we gave this nursing home came in the category of nursing, where we gave it a grade of C. This wasn't quite as good as some of its other scores, but a grade in this range is not the end of the world. We scrutinized the levels of nurses employed by the nursing home, as well as the number of hours the nurses spent with residents, in determining our score in this category. This nursing home averages just 0.3 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is a very low figure. Finally, we also assessed some nursing quality measures. While this place got docked a bit for nursing hours per resident, it excelled in some of these quality metrics. With less than five percent of its residents sustaining pressure ulcers, it performed well in this area. This is often a good indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can often be avoided by offering better nursing care, such as by having a policy of moving residents even once per day.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: C

The next category we graded was long-term care. We awarded it a C in this area. This is a perfectly acceptable grade in this area. In a long-term care environment, the nursing home's primary objective is to maintain patients' quality of life and keep them safe. Once we finished looking at the amount of care provided by nurses, we then looked at the nursing home's vaccination records. We were optimistic to learn that this nursing home vaccinated 100 percent of its patients for pneumonia. This facility also excelled at keeping its residents out of the hospital. In fact, it had less than one hospitalization per one thousand long-term resident days, which is an impressively low figure.
