Facility Inspections
We also wanted to emphasize the fact that this facility earned near flawless inspections recently. We gave them an impressive grade of A+ in this category. Our inspection grades are based on items located in the a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Facilities that score well in this area have very few deficiencies on their reports. Most importantly, these places generally do not have any severe deficiencies which are associated with risks to patient safety. While this facility had some minor dings on its inspection report, it had zero severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are ones labeled as categories G through L. This tells you that the inspectors did not consider any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Long-term Care Quality
To add to its strong accomplishments in other areas, we awarded this facility a grade of A- for our long-term care rating. When nursing homes receive this type of grade in this category it is usually a good sign for resident care and suggests that the place is well-staffed with nurses aids. One of the factors we considered on top of this nursing home's impressive nursing hours was vaccines. This nursing home provided the pneumonia vaccination to 100 percent of its patients. Vaccines are a great way to avoid unnecessary deaths for the elderly. This combination proved to be successful as this facility also excelled at keeping its patients out of the hospital. In fact, it had only 0.59 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, which is an impressively low figure.
Short-term Care Quality
Turning to an additional strength for this facility, we awarded them one of our better scores in our short-term care category as well, with a grade of B+. Our short-term care ratings are arguably more important for individuals needing rehabilitation from their nursing home. Rehabilitation usually requires additional highly-skilled nursing. This includes not just nursing, but also physical and occupational therapy, as well as other forms of therapy. We were pleased to find that this nursing home employs both registered nurses and physical therapists. The same can't be said for all nursing homes. Finally, we assessed the number of residents that ultimately were able to return home from this nursing home. We found that 44 percent of this facility's residents were able to return home.
Nurse Quality
The final category we looked at was nursing. We awarded this facility one of our better scores in that category, with a B. Even though this wasn't as strong as a few of its other grades, it is still a fine score. In computing a nursing home's nursing rating, we weigh the quantity of hours nurses are caring for patients and the level of skill of those nurses. This facility provided 4.1 hours of nursing care per resident daily. This is a very impressive figure which typically corresponds with quality care. Lastly, this place also performed well in several of the quality measures we looked at. By way of illustration, in terms of the number of its patients suffering from pressure ulcers, this place performed better than the national average. This is usually an indicator that a place has reliable quality controls. Pressure ulcers can generally be prevented with better nursing care and having a policy of regularly turning residents to avoid bed sores.
