Long-term Care Quality
On top of being a quality facility overall, this nursing home really excelled in our long-term care category, where it earned an A. Few nursing homes fared better in this area. In a long-term care environment, the facility's primary goal is to keep patients as healthy and safe as possible. This is different than skilled nursing or short-term care where the goal is to rehabilitate residents. Once we looked at the volume of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we then analyzed the nursing home's vaccination data. This facility vaccinated 92.68292 percent of its residents for pneumonia, which happens to be slightly below what we were hoping for but still a decent figure. Clearly, this nursing home is doing something right in this area as it also excelled at keeping its patients out of the hospital. Indeed, it had less than one hospitalization per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low figure.
Facility Inspections
In addition, this facility also excelled in the area of inspections, where it received a grade of A-. Few nursing homes performed better in this area. Perhaps the most important factor we consider in calculating our inspection ratings is deficiencies. These deficiencies are found on a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Places with better scores in this area most likely dodged the most severe deficiencies involving patient abuse or death. It doesn't look like we have deficiency counts for this nursing home. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.

Nurse Quality
Turning to the category of nursing care, this facility didn't perform quite as well in this area as some of the categories discussed above. Nevertheless, a grade of B- in this category is by no means a bad score. Nursing scores are primarily associated with a facility's level of nurse staffing. This nursing home provides 0.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is a much lower figure than we are used to seeing. Lastly, we also assessed several nursing quality measures. Although this nursing home got dinged a bit for nursing hours, it excelled in some of these quality measures. With fewer than five percent of its patients suffering from pressure ulcers, it fared well in this area. This is often an indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can typically be avoided by offering better nursing care, such as by employing a protocol of turning residents more often.
Short-term Care Quality
Moving on to our fourth category, this facility didn't fare very well. With a very poor grade of F in that category, this was obviously this facility's poorest category grade. In determining these short-term care scores, we quantify the facility's skilled nursing services, including those performed by registered nurses, speech therapists, physical therapists and other types of skilled professionals. The purpose is to devise a tool for sizing up the rehabilitation services of different facilities. Unfortunately, we found that this nursing home provided fewer physical therapist and registered nurse hours per resident than most other facilities. Finally, we assessed the percentage of residents who were able to return home from this facility. This facility didn't fare well here either. In fact, we found that just 2.9 percent of this facility's patients were able to return home. This figure was quite a bit off the national average.
