On top of being a strong nursing home overall, this place excelled in our inspections category, where it received an A+. Few facilities fared better in that category. Inspection scores weigh several factors, including deficiencies, substantiated complaints and federal fines. This particular nursing home had just a single deficiency on its inspection report and it was not one deemed to pose a threat to patient health or safety. Even some of the best nursing homes receive an occasional ding on their inspection report.

This nursing home truly excelled in the category of long-term care, where it received a grade of A-. Few nursing homes performed better in this area. Long-term care scores in this range generally require both 24/7 care from nurses and aids, as well as quality routine medical care. After considering the amount of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we then analyzed the nursing home's vaccination data. This nursing home vaccinated 100 percent of its residents for pneumonia, which is significantly higher than the average nursing home. Clearly, this facility is doing something right in this area as it also excelled at keeping its residents out of the hospital. It had only 0.02 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, which is an impressively low figure.

This facility's next best category was its nursing grade, where it received a grade of C. While this didn't quite match its scores in some of the categories discussed above, this is still a decent score. Nursing scores are heavily correlated with quality and quantity of nursing care. This nursing home provides 0.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is a much lower figure than we are used to seeing. Lastly, nursing grades also factor in quality-based measures, such as avoiding major falls. Despite not having the most impressive total nursing hours per resident, this place actually performed admirably in the area of preventing major falls. This is often a good indicator that a facility has sufficient quality controls in place. Some falls can be avoided if a nursing home provides enough nurses aids to assist its patients.

Turning to the fourth area, this nursing home really didn't perform well. Due to a rock bottom grade of F in that area, this was notably its worst area. In calculating these short-term care grades, we quantify the facility's skilled nursing services, including those performed by registered nurses, respiratory therapists, physical therapists and other types of therapists. Our goal is to devise a measure for comparing the rehabilitation services of different nursing homes. Unfortunately, we found that this nursing home provided fewer physical therapist and registered nurse hours per resident than most other facilities. Finally, we considered the percentage of patients who were able to return to the community from this facility. This definitely was not a strength for this facility. We found that just 4.1 percent of this nursing home's residents returned home. At most facilities, around half of their residents are able to return home so this is well below average.
