Facility Inspections
In addition to being a respectable facility overall, this place really excelled in the area of inspections, where it received an A. Few nursing homes performed better in this area. Inspection ratings weigh a host of factors found on a nursing home's inspection reports. One key criteria we look at is the quantity and severity of deficiencies. Nursing homes with higher grades in this category generally have very few of these severe deficiencies. Amazingly, this was one of the few nursing homes in the country that had no deficiencies whatsoever on its inspection report. This is very impressive. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is always a good sign.
Long-term Care Quality
This nursing home also performed well in the area of long-term care. For this reason, we gave it a grade of A in that area, which happens to be one of our best scores. Nursing homes that excel in long-term care tend to provide residents with better supervision and stay on top of routine medical care. Once we assessed the volume of nursing care, we then analyzed the facility's vaccination records. This facility vaccinated 99.0566 percent of its patients against pneumonia, which is very impressive. Pneumonia can be a deadly health condition for nursing home residents so we prefer when a nursing home does not leave its residents vulnerable. Lastly, we looked at the facility's number of hospitalizations. Here we found that this facility had 2.38 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days.
Short-term Care Quality
The next category we graded is short-term care. This nursing home's received a poor short-term care grade where it was given a lowly F. In forming our short-term care grades, we quantify the nursing home's skilled nursing services, including those performed by registered nurses, respiratory therapists, physical therapists and other types of skilled professionals. The purpose is to formulate a tool for sizing up the rehabilitation services of various nursing homes. With a score in this range for this category, we weren't shocked to find this facility was well below average in the two key staffing figures we looked at. In fact, it provided substantially fewer physical therapist and registered nurse hours per patient than most other facilities. The final measure we looked at in this category is the percentage of residents who returned home from the facility. This nursing home struggled quite a bit in this area as well, with just 39.1 percent of its residents returning home. Unfortunately, this was well below the national average.
Nurse Quality
The final category we graded was nursing. We gave it an abysmal F in this area, which is a rock bottom score. This is clearly a significant disappointment. When determining our nursing scores, we assess both the number of hours nurses spend with residents and the levels of licensure of the nurses. This facility offered only 3.3 hours of nursing care per resident each day. This is an alarmingly low total. To pair with its low totals in the area of nursing hours per patient, this facility also didn't perform as well in the quality-based measures we looked at in calculating our nursing grades. We looked at the percentage of patients sustaining major falls and pressure ulcers. This place had more falls and pressure ulcers than the average facility. This could be a bad sign when you consider that many falls and bed sores are believed to be preventable with better nursing care. These metrics hurt this nursing home's nursing rating significantly.
