This nursing home received a strong overall score as described above, but we especially would like to emphasize its nearly flawless government inspections in recent years. We gave it an A in this area. Inspection grades weigh several factors, including deficiencies and substantiated complaints. This facility received 7 deficiencies on its inspection report, but none were considered to be severe deficiencies. This tells you that CMS did not consider any of the deficiencies to pose an immediate risk to resident safety or health. A few minor deficiencies aren't something to panic about.

One of the other reasons we rated this nursing home so highly is that it earned a very impressive nursing score. In fact, nursing proved to be its second best category grade. In that area, we awarded this nursing home a grade of B. When calculating our nursing grades, we look at both nursing hours and the skill levels of the nurses. This particular nursing home provided 0.3 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, we also looked at several nursing quality measures and this nursing home excelled in some of these areas. With less than five percent of its residents sustaining pressure ulcers, it performed as well as any facility Illinois in this category. This is generally a good indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can frequently be avoided by providing better nursing care, such as employing a protocol of moving a patient more frequently.

This nursing home received its next best category score in the area of long-term care. We gave this facility a grade of B- in this area, which is an acceptable grade. Our long-term care ratings are based in part on a nursing home's volume of care. This means a broad spectrum of personal care services, ranging from assistance with activities of daily living to routine medical services. In addition to looking at the volume of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we looked at the number of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This nursing home gave the vaccine to 92.89618 percent of its residents. This is a bit below what we were hoping for but still a decent figure. On a more positive note, this place was able to limit hospitalizations. Indeed, it had only 0.02 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low figure.

Turning to our final area, this nursing home was awarded a decent short-term care grade of C. In determining these short-term care ratings, we assess the facility's skilled nursing services, such as those performed by registered nurses, respiratory therapists, physical therapists and other types of therapists. Our purpose is to create a barometer for sizing up the rehabilitation services of nursing homes. Fortunately, it appear that this facility has registered nurses on staff. Not all nursing homes employs these skilled professionals. However, based on the information they provided, it does not look like the facility employs physical therapists. Lastly, we considered the number of patients who who were able to eventually return home from this nursing home. We found that 3.6 percent of this facility's patients were able to return home. This figure was well below average.
