Long-term Care Quality

Grade: A-plus

In addition to being a first rate facility overall, this facility also performed well in our long-term care category, where it received an A+. Few nursing homes fared better in this area. Nursing homes that receive this type of score in this category typically provide consistent around the clock care to make sure patients are well cared for. After considering the amount of care provided by aids and other staff, we then analyzed the facility's vaccination data. This facility vaccinated 100 percent of its patients against pneumonia. Vaccines are critical to keeping residents out of the hospital. Clearly, this nursing home is doing something right in this area as it was able to keep its residents out of the hospital. In fact, it had only 0.01 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is an impressively low number.

Facility Inspections

Grade: A

Turning to our inspection category, this nursing home excelled in that area, which is based on the nursing home's recent inspections. In fact, we awarded it a grade of A for that category. Inspection grades weigh several factors, including deficiencies, substantiated complaints and federal fines. You can learn more about each of these factors by obtaining copies of nursing homes' inspection reports. This particular nursing home had just a single deficiency on its inspection report and it was not one deemed to pose a threat to patient health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.

Nurse Quality

Grade: A-minus

Adding to its strong resume, this facility also received an excellent nursing score, with a grade of A-. In computing our nursing scores, we factor in both the number of hours nurses spend with residents and the skill levels of the nurses. This particular nursing home provided 0.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, we also looked at several nursing quality-based metrics and this facility excelled in some of these areas. With less than five percent of its residents sustaining pressure ulcers, it performed as well as any place Texas in this category. This is generally a good indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can many times be avoided by providing better nursing care, such as having a policy of turning a patient more often.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: B-minus

The next area we scored was short-term care, in which this facility was awarded a B-. This proved to be this nursing home's weakest area. This is nevertheless not a poor grade. Our short-term care grades are meaningful for patients in need of rehabilitation. Rehabilitation usually requires additional highly-skilled nursing. This means a vast spectrum of services, spanning from registered nurses to physical and speech therapists, as well as other variations of therapy. Fortunately, it appear that this facility employs registered nurses. Not all facilities employs these skilled professionals. However, according to the data they provided, they do not appear to employ physical therapists. Finally, we considered the percentage of patients who were able to return to the community from this nursing home. We found that 0 percent of this facility's patients returned home. At most nursing homes, closer to half of their residents are able to return home so this figure is below average.
