Registered Staff Hours
The primary reason this ended up being a decent nursing home is that it received an elite inspection score. In fact, its inspection score was far better than its overall grade. In the inspections category, we gave this facility an A. Our inspection grades weigh several factors found on a facility's inspection reports. One key criteria we look at is the quantity and severity of deficiencies. Places with higher scores in this area generally have few of these severe deficiencies. Although this place had a few deficiencies on its inspection report, none were serious based on CMS' deficiency scale. A couple minor deficiencies shouldn't stop you from considering a nursing home.
This nursing home also received a strong nursing grade. In fact, we awarded it a grade of B in that category, which is one of our better scores. When determining our nursing grades, we look at both staffing levels and the skill levels of those nurses. This facility provided 0.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Lastly, we also looked at some nursing quality measures in determining our nursing grades. This place performed very well in terms of avoiding pressure ulcers and major falls. We consider these areas to be good indicators of the quality of nursing care.

Long-term Care Quality
Moving on to the category of long-term care, this nursing home received just a D in that category. If you are seeking services other than rehabilitation, you should take a close look at each facility's long-term care scores. After we finished looking at the quantity of nursing care, we turned to the nursing home's vaccination record. We were optimistic to discover that this nursing home vaccinated 100 percent of its patients against pneumonia. To our surprise, this nursing home was able to limit hospitalizations. With only 0.01 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, this nursing home has less hospitalizations than most nursing homes. Unfortunately, some of its other scores in this category weren't as favorable as these.
Short-term Care Quality
The next category we looked at was short-term care, was this facility's worst area. We awarded this nursing home a grade of D in that area. In the category of short-term care, we attempt to evaluate measures of a nursing home's rehabilitation. We look at the nursing home's skilled nursing services, such as those performed by registered nurses and various therapists. Considering its weak grade in this category, we were not shocked to discover this facility offers far fewer physical therapist and registered nurse hours per resident than most facilities. The final measure we assessed in this category is the percentage of residents who were able to leave the nursing home and return to the community. We discovered that just 3.9 percent of this facility's patients were able to return home, which is well below average. The combination of these subpar metrics doomed this facility's short-term care grade.
