Facility Inspections
While this nursing home's overall grade was not bad, it really excelled in the area of inspections. In fact, we awarded it a grade of A for that category, which is one of our highest scores. Inspection grades take several factors into consideration, including deficiencies and federal fines. You can learn more about each of these items by obtaining copies of nursing homes' inspection reports. While this nursing home had some minor dings on its inspection report, it had zero severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are ones labeled as categories G through L. This tells you that CMS did not consider any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is always a good sign.
Long-term Care Quality
Another strength of this nursing home is its top-shelf grade in long-term care. We awarded it one of our most impressive scores in that category, with a grade of A-. When facilities receive a grade in this range in this category it generally means it has plenty of staff and is an overall good place to reside on a permanent basis. In addition to assessing the quantity of care provided by nurses and other staff, we also looked at the number of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This facility gave the vaccine to 97.86325 percent of its patients. Vaccines are critical to keeping patients out of the hospital. This facility also keeps its residents out of the hospital. Although it had 2.04 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, its risk adjusted score was better than most nursing homes since it had some more complex patients.
Nurse Quality
Next we looked at nursing grades, where this nursing home received an F, which is a rock bottom grade. This area was definitely not a strength for this facility. Our nursing rating includes quite a few subcategories, many of which are associated with levels of nurse staffing. This facility provided just 3.2 hours of nursing care per resident on a daily basis. This is a very low total compared to most nursing homes. To go along with its subpar totals in the area of nursing hours per resident, this facility also didn't perform as well in the quality-based measures we looked at in determining our nursing ratings. We looked at the percent of patients sustaining pressure ulcers and major falls. This facility had more falls and pressure ulcers than the average facility.
Short-term Care Quality
The final area we looked at is short-term care. Unfortunately, we gave it an abysmal F for this area, which is a very poor score. This is certainly a major disappointment. Short-term care grades are based on a facility's quantity of skilled highly skilled professionals. This includes a wide range of nursing services, ranging from registered nurses to physical and speech therapists, as well as other forms of therapy. Not surprisingly, we found that this place offers significantly less registered nurse and physical therapist hours per resident than the average facility. Lastly, we assessed the number of residents that who were able to eventually return home from this facility. This facility didn't fare well here either. In fact, we found that just 29.1 percent of this facility's residents were able to return home. This figure was well off the national average.
