Facility Inspections
To pair with its relatively modest overall grade, we awarded this nursing home a grade of A for our inspections rating. This is far more impressive than the facility's overall grade. We weigh several aspects of a nursing home's inspection report in computing these inspection scores. One key factor is deficiencies. It should be noted that the severity of the deficiencies is usually more meaningful than the quantity of deficiencies, as some deficiencies are quite insignificant. This facility was assessed 5 deficiencies on its inspection report, but we were relieved to see that none were considered severe. This tells you that the inspectors did not consider any of the deficiencies to pose an immediate risk to patient health or safety. A few minor deficiencies should not lead you to cross a nursing home off your list.
Long-term Care Quality
This nursing home's next highest area ended up being long-term care. In that area, we gave this facility a grade of B-. Our long-term care scores are more meaningful for individuals requiring more conventional assistance related to activities of daily living. On top of considering the quantity of care provided by aids and other staff, we analyzed the percentage of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. Fortunately, this nursing home administered the vaccine to 99.26471 percent of its residents, which is a very solid total. The last datapoint we looked at was its hospitalization rate. Although it had 2.15 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, its risk adjusted metric was not too far off the national average.
Nurse Quality
This nursing home's next best category was nursing. We awarded it a grade of C in this category. This is basically a middle of the road grade in this category. The nursing grade includes quite a few factors, but the paramount one is the level of nurse hours spent with patients. Based on the CMS data, this nursing home offers 3.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, we also assessed some nursing quality measures and this place excelled in some of these datapoints. With fewer than five percent of its patients suffering from pressure ulcers, it fared very well in this subcategory.
Short-term Care Quality
The final area we scored was short-term care. Sadly, it received an F for this area, which is a rock bottom grade. This is clearly a significant concern. Short-term care grades are typically used to measure a nursing home's rehabilitation services. In order to provide highly graded rehabilitation services, nursing homes generally must offer higher levels of skilled nursing. Skilled nursing includes registered nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists and other types of therapists. Based on its score in this category, we were not stunned to discover that this nursing home was well below average in terms of the number of registered nurse and physical therapy hours provided to its residents based on the measures we assessed. Honestly, this was what we expected to find. The last measure we considered in this area is the number of patients that were able to return home from the nursing home. This facility struggled quite a bit in this area as well, with just 38.6 percent of its patients returning home.
