Facility Inspections
One of the reasons this turned out to be a strong nursing home is that it received a very impressive inspection score. Inspections is its best category grade. In that area, we gave it an A. We weigh several aspects of a nursing home's inspection report in calculating these inspection grades. One critical factor is deficiencies. You should keep in mind that the severity of these deficiencies is arguably more important than the number of deficiencies, as some of these are relatively minor. While this facility had some minor dings on its inspection report, it had no severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are ones labeled as categories G through L. This tells you CMS did not deem any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient safety or health. A few minor deficiencies are not something to panic about.
Short-term Care Quality
This facility also received a favorable short-term care grade. Indeed, we awarded it an above average score of B+ in this category. In the area of short-term care, we endeavor to assess measures of a facility's rehabilitation services. We look at the nursing home's skilled nursing services, including those performed by registered nurses and various therapists. Fortunately, this nursing home offers both physical therapists and registered nurses. Not all facilities offer both. This nursing home performed much better in the final datapoint we considered in this area, which was the percentage of residents who were able to leave the nursing home and return home. It fared as well as just about any nursing home in Oklahoma in this metric with 58.7 percent of its residents returning home. With most facilities, less than half of their short-term residents are able to return home.
Nurse Quality
In addition, this facility also received favorable nursing grades this year. In fact, we awarded them one of our better scores in that area, with a grade of B+. There are several subcategories included in this grade. Many of the criteria relate to the quantity and quality of nurse staffing. This facility provided 3.6 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, we also factored a few quality measures into our nursing grades. This nursing home was relatively weak in two of the major areas we focus on, with below average scores for minimizing its residents' major falls and pressure ulcers. These areas are generally reliable indicators of the quality of nursing care provided.
Long-term Care Quality
Switching gears to our final area, this facility was awarded a high-end long-term care grade. This facility didn't turn out to have any weak spots. When nursing homes receive this type of grade in this category it is usually a good sign for patient care and indicates that the place is well-staffed with nurses aids. After we finished assessing the quantity of nursing care, we then looked at the nursing home's vaccination data. This facility vaccinated 96.33699 percent of its residents for pneumonia, which is what we like to see. Pneumonia sadly is often a life or death condition for nursing home residents so we like it when a nursing home does not roll the dice on this issue. Finally, we looked at the nursing home's number of hospitalizations. With 1.8 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, this facility was just about middle of the pack in this area.
