Facility Inspections
To go along with its strong overall grade, we awarded this nursing home a grade of A+ for our inspections rating. Inspection grades are based on several pieces of information located in the a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Places that score well in this category typically have few deficiencies on their reports. Most importantly, these facilities generally do not have any severe deficiencies which are associated with endangerment of patients. This particular nursing home had just a single deficiency on its inspection report and it was not one deemed to pose a threat to patient health or safety. Even some of the best nursing homes receive an occasional ding on their inspection report.
Short-term Care Quality
This exemplary facility also performed remarkably in the area of short-term care, where we awarded it a grade of A+. Few nursing homes fared better in this area. With our short-term care rating, we seek to craft a valuable gauge for rehabilitation services. In this process, we analyze a facility's level of highly-skilled nursing services, including both registered nurses and physical therapy, as well as speech therapy. This place excelled in the two key staffing areas we looked at. It provided more care from registered nurses and physical therapists than a typical nursing home. The final metric we looked at in this category is the percentage of patients who were able to leave the nursing home and return to the community. We found that it performed as well as just about any facility in South Carolina in this area with 63.8 percent of its patients returning home.
Nurse Quality
Another strong feature for this facility is that it received an impressive nursing grade. In that area, we awarded this facility a grade of B+. When calculating our nursing ratings, we look at both nursing hours and the training levels of those nurses. This nursing home averages 3.2 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Lastly, we also assessed certain nursing quality measures in computing our nursing grades. These include minimizing residents' pressure ulcers and major falls. We view these statistics as reliable indicators of the quality of nursing care offered, since better care tends to reduce these problems.
Long-term Care Quality
Switching gears to the fourth category, this facility received a strong long-term care rating. We gave it a grade of B+ in this area, topping off one of our finer report cards. Long-term care scores in this range generally require both around the clock care from nurses and aids, as well as quality routine healthcare services. Once we looked at the volume of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we then analyzed the facility's vaccination data. This nursing home vaccinated 100 percent of its residents against pneumonia, which is far higher than the majority of nursing homes. The last statistic we looked at is the nursing home's hospitalization rate. Here we found that this facility had 1.94 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is close to average in this area.
