Long-term Care Quality
One of the many reasons this turned out to be a great facility is that it earned a very impressive long-term care rating. This turned out to be its best grade. In this area, we gave this facility an A. Nursing homes that do well in this category typically provide residents with more supervision and stay on top of routine medical care. One of the datapoints we considered on top of this nursing home's quality nursing hours was vaccines. This facility provided the pneumonia vaccination to 100 percent of its patients. Vaccines are a great way to avoid unnecessary deaths and hospitalizations for the elderly. The last statistic we assessed was the facility's hospitalization rate. Here we found that this place had 3.47 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days. Although this wasn't as impressive as most of its other scores in this area, this figure can be skewed for some nursing homes due to some of the medical complexity of residents.
Short-term Care Quality
This nursing home also was given a top-shelf short-term care grade. This actually turned out to be its second most impressive category score. In that area, we gave this facility a grade of A. Short-term care grades are meaningful for individuals requiring rehabilitation. Rehabilitation generally utilizes higher levels of highly-skilled nursing. This includes a broad range of services, ranging from registered nurses to physical and speech therapists, as well as other forms of therapy. We were extremely impressed to learn that this nursing home offers its patients significantly more physical therapist hours than most other facilities. The last metric we assessed in this area is the number of residents who returned home from the facility. We found that it performed as well as just about any nursing home in Florida in this area with 65.8 percent of its residents returning home. With most facilities, fewer than half of their short-stay residents are able to return home.
Facility Inspections
Racking up another strong category grade, this facility also excelled in inspections, where it received a grade of A. Few nursing homes performed better in this category. We weigh several aspects of a nursing home's inspection report in determining our inspection grades. One of those factors is deficiencies. It should be noted that the severity of the deficiencies is usually more meaningful than the number of deficiencies, as some of these can be relatively minor. Although this facility had some deficiencies on its inspection report, none of them were severe based on CMS' deficiency scale. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Nurse Quality
The next area we rated was nursing. In this area, we gave this facility a solid grade of B-. This actually turned out to be this facility's weakest area. In calculating a nursing home's nursing score, we look at the quantity of hours nurses spend with residents and the levels of training of the nurses. This place provides an impressive 4.3 hours of nursing care per patient per day. This is a greater quantity of nursing care than that offered by most facilities. Finally, our nursing scores also factor in quality-based metrics, such as avoiding major falls. This facility performed admirably in this metric.
