On top of being a strong facility overall, this nursing home excelled in the area of inspections, where it earned an A. Not many nursing homes performed better in that area. We take several aspects of a facility's inspection report into consideration in determining these inspection grades. One key factor is health deficiencies. You should keep in mind that the severity of these deficiencies is arguably more meaningful than the quantity of deficiencies, as some end up being quite minor. This facility was hit with 6 deficiencies on its inspection report, but none of the deficiencies were considered to be severe deficiencies. This tells you that CMS didn't consider any of the deficiencies to create an imminent threat to resident health or safety. The fact that none of the deficiencies were severe made us feel better about this inspection report.

We also gave this nursing home a score of A- for our short-term care score. In computing our short-term care grades, we scrutinize the facility's levels of highly skilled nursing services, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists speech therapists and other types of therapists. This score is more often than not a useful measure of the facility's rehabilitation services. This nursing home provided more registered nurse and physical therapist hours per resident than most facilities. Finally, we looked at the percentage of patients who were able to return to the community from this facility. We found that it outperformed the vast majority of facilities in this area with 58.8 percent of its patients returning home.

This nursing home performed well in our nursing category. In fact, we awarded it a grade of A- for that category, which is one of our highest scores. The nursing rating consists of quite a few subcategories, most of which are tied to quantities of nurse staffing. This nursing home boasts a really impressive 4.2 hours of nursing care per patient each day, of which a significant portion was provided by registered nurses. This is one of the more highly trained levels of nurses. This is one of the higher totals of nursing hours we found at any facility. In addition to providing high levels of care, this facility also excelled in the quality-based metrics we assessed. By way of illustration, it performed as well as any nursing home in the state when it comes to avoiding major falls and pressure ulcers. We view these areas as reliable indicators of the quality of nursing care provided.

Historical

Moving on to the final area, we gave this facility a grade of D for our long-term care category. This was the facility's worst category rating. Nevertheless, you shouldn't over-emphasize one bad area. In a long-term care environment, the facility's primary objective is to keep patients as healthy and safe as possible. This is different than skilled nursing or short-term care where the goal is to rehabilitate residents. In addition to providing solid levels of nurse staffing, this facility gave the pneumonia vaccine to 96.63866 percent of its residents. These marks are notably more favorable than a few of its other marks in this category. To our surprise, this nursing home also was not as bad as we expected at keeping its patients out of the hospital. While it had 2.52 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, its risk adjusted metric wasn't bad due to it having some more complex patients.
