In addition to earning a great overall score, this facility received an A+ for short-term care. In calculating our short-term care ratings, we assess a facility's levels of skilled nursing services, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists respiratory therapists and other highly trained professionals. This category is frequently a fair assessment of the facility's rehabilitation. This facility excelled in the two key staffing areas we looked at. It offered more care from physical therapists and registered nurses than the average nursing home. This is generally an excellent sign. The last measure we assessed in this category is the percentage of residents that eventually returned home from the facility. We found that it fared as well as just about any facility in Illinois in this area with 70 percent of its patients returning home.

In addition, this nursing home also performed well in our inspection category, which is based on its inspection reports. We gave it an A- for that area. Our inspection grades are tied to datapoints found on the a nursing home's government inspections. Places that score well in this category typically have very few deficiencies on their reports. Most importantly, these facilities generally do not have any severe deficiencies which are associated with risks to patient safety. This place received 7 deficiencies on its inspection report, but we were relieved to see that none were considered to be major deficiencies. This indicates that CMS did not consider any of these deficiencies to cause an imminent threat to patient health or safety. We should note that deficiency-free inspection reports are uncommon in this industry.

This facility is also strong in the area of nursing, where it received a grade of B+. It outperformed most nursing homes in this category. Our nursing grade is based on quite a few factors, but the primary consideration is the number of nurse hours per patient per week. This nursing home offers 3.7 hours of nursing care per resident daily, of which more than an hour was provided by registered nurses. This is one of the more highly skilled nurses. In determining our nursing grades, we attach more significance to hours performed by registered or licensed nurses. Lastly, we also assessed certain nursing quality measures in computing our nursing grades. These include minimizing residents' pressure ulcers and major falls. We view these metrics as predictive measures of the caliber of nursing care provided, since better care tends to reduce these problems.

This facility's weakest category was long-term care, which is the last category we assessed. In this area, we gave this nursing home a D. We wanted to draw your attention to this possible area of weakness, however, you shouldn't over-emphasize one area either. In a long-term care setting, the primary goal is to maintain patients' quality of life and keep them safe. On top of assessing the volume of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we looked at the percentage of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This facility vaccinated 95.07042 percent of its residents. To our surprise, this place also fared well at keeping its patients out of the hospital. It had just 1.67 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days. Sadly, a few of its other scores in this category weren't as favorable as these.
