To go along with its strong overall grade, we awarded this nursing home a grade of A+ for our inspections rating. Inspection scores take several factors into consideration, including deficiencies, substantiated complaints and federal fines. You can find more information about each of these factors by obtaining copies of nursing homes' inspection reports. Although this nursing home had some deficiencies on its inspection report, none were severe based on CMS' scale. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.

To add to its top-shelf assessments in other areas, we gave this facility a grade of A for its short-term care score. Our short-term care ratings are vital for prospective residents looking for rehabilitation. Rehabilitation typically requires additional highly-skilled nursing. This means a wide spectrum of services, spanning from registered nurses to physical and speech therapists, as well as other types of therapy. This nursing home boosted its score in this category by offering more physical therapy hours to its residents than the average facility. Lastly, we looked at the number of residents that ultimately were able to return home from this facility. On top of excelling in the area of physical therapy, we found that it performed as well as just about any nursing home in the nation with 57.4 percent of its patients returning home.

To complement its strong performance in other areas, we awarded this nursing home a grade of A+ for our inspections rating. In computing a facility's nursing score, we look at the quantity of hours nurses spend with patients and the skill levels of the nurses. This particular nursing home provided 3.7 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, our nursing grades also factor in quality-based assessments, such as avoiding major falls. This nursing home performed well in this area. Avoiding major falls is typically a good indicator that a place has reliable quality controls in place. Major falls can typically be prevented if more nurses aids and better safety protocols are in place.

The final category we scored was long-term care, where this facility was awarded a grade of B+. This rounded out a very favorable report card. Only a select few nursing homes earned a B+ or higher in all four categories. Nursing homes that do well in long-term care tend to be well-staffed and provide extensive hands on care to residents. After assessing the volume of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we then looked at the facility's vaccination record. This facility vaccinated 100 percent of its residents against pneumonia, which is much higher than the majority of nursing homes. Clearly, this nursing home is doing something right in this area as it was able to keep its patients out of the hospital. It had only 0.81 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is an impressively low figure.
