This facility received a strong overall grade as described above, but we especially wanted to note its excellent short-term care grade. We awarded them an A in this area. Our short-term care scores are meaningful for individuals requiring rehabilitation. Rehabilitation usually mandates higher levels of skilled nursing. This means a wide spectrum of nursing services, spanning from registered nurses to physical and respiratory therapists, as well as other forms of therapy. Unfortunately, it does not look like this facility submitted data regarding its registered nurse or physical therapy staffing. Finally, we assessed the number of residents who were able to return to the community from this nursing home. We found that 6.7 percent of this nursing home's residents returned home.

We also awarded this nursing home a grade of A- for our nursing grade. Our nursing rating includes a host of subcategories. The most heavily weighted factor is the amount of time nurses spend with patients. This facility provided 0 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, our nursing grades also factor in quality-based assessments, such as avoiding major falls. This place performed well in this area. Avoiding major falls is typically a good indicator that a facility has reliable quality controls in place. Major falls can frequently be prevented if more nurses aids and better safety protocols are in place.

Adding to its impressive category grades, we awarded this nursing home a grade of B+ for our inspections rating. Arguably the most critical factor we look at in determining our inspection scores is deficiencies. These deficiencies can be found on a facility's inspection reports. Facilities with better scores in this area most likely dodged the more severe deficiencies involving things like patient abuse. While this place had a few deficiencies on its inspection report, none of them were severe based on CMS' deficiency scale. A couple relatively minor dings are not necessarily something to panic about.

Turning to our next area, we gave this nursing home a grade of D in our long-term care category. This is the facility's weakest category grade. However, you shouldn't focus exclusively one poor area. In a long-term care environment, the primary objective is to keep patients as healthy and safe as possible. This is different than skilled nursing or short-term care where the goal is to rehabilitate residents. Once we looked at the volume of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we turned to the facility's vaccination data. This facility vaccinated 100 percent of its residents against pneumonia, which is more than the vast majority of nursing homes. To our surprise, this facility was able to limit hospitalizations. With only 0 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, this nursing home has less hospitalizations than the majority of nursing homes. Unfortunately, a few of its other scores in this category weren't as favorable as these.
