Facility Inspections

Grade: A-plus

The main reason this nursing home received a decent overall grade is its impeccable government inspections in recent years. We awarded it one of our better scores in that area, with a grade of A+. This is a notably better grade than the place's overall score, which was decent but not in the elite range. Our inspection grades are based on many items found on the a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Nursing homes that receive favorable grades in this area typically have few deficiencies on their reports. Most importantly, these nursing homes should not have any severe deficiencies which are associated with endangerment of patients. Although this place had a few deficiencies on its government inspection report, none were severe based on CMS' deficiency scale. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: A-minus

This nursing home also excelled in the category of long-term care, where it received a score of A-. Not many nursing homes fared more favorably in this area. Facilities that excel in long-term care typically provide patients with better supervision and stay on top of routine healthcare services. In addition to assessing the quantity of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we analyzed the number of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This facility gave the vaccine to 100 percent of its residents. Vaccines are critical to keeping residents healthy. Clearly, this place is doing something right in this area as it was able to keep its residents out of the hospital. It had less than one hospitalization per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low figure.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: D

We gave this nursing home a grade of just D for our short-term care rating. This is not a score to write home about. In determining our short-term care grades, we assess the facility's skilled nursing services, including those performed by registered nurses, respiratory therapists, physical therapists and other types of therapists. Our objective is to devise a tool for sizing up the rehabilitation services of nursing homes. Unfortunately, we learned that this facility offered fewer physical therapist and registered nurse hours per patient than most facilities. Lastly, we considered the number of residents who returned home from this facility. This facility didn't fare well here either. In fact, we found that just 5.3 percent of this facility's residents were able to return home.

Nurse Quality

Grade: F

The last category we assessed was nursing. Unfortunately, we gave it an F in this area, which is a very poor grade. This is certainly a major concern. There are several criteria within this grade. Most of these subcategories reflect levels of nurse staffing. This facility offered just 0.3 hours of nursing care per patient daily. This is well below average. On top of receiving below average marks for total nursing hours, this nursing home was a bit less impressive in some of the quality-based measures we looked at in calculating our nursing scores. We looked at the percent of residents sustaining pressure ulcers and found that this nursing home was at roughly 150 percent of the national average in this metric. This is likely a bad sign when you consider that so many bed sores are preventable with better nursing care. Unfortunately, this statistic dragged down this nursing home's nursing score substantially.
