Facility Inspections
In addition to being a great overall grade, this facility also received A+ health inspections in recent years. Its inspections were virtually flawless. Inspection ratings account for a host of factors included in a nursing home's inspection reports. One key criteria we weigh heavily is the number and severity of deficiencies. Nursing homes with better scores in this area tend to have very few severe deficiencies. This facility was hit with 2 deficiencies on its inspection report, but none of the deficiencies were considered severe. This means that the inspectors didn't deem any of the deficiencies to cause an imminent threat to patient safety or health. Remember that deficiency-free inspections are rare in this industry.
Nurse Quality
Adding to its impressive resume, this nursing home also excelled in our nursing category. In fact, we awarded it a grade of A- for that category. Nursing scores are mostly associated with a facility's nurse staffing. This nursing home offers 3.2 hours of nursing care per resident per day, of which more than one hour of those were provided by registered nurses. This is one of the more highly skilled nurses. In determining our nursing grades, we attach more weight to hours provided by registered nurses. Finally, we also assessed several nursing quality measures and this nursing home excelled in some of these areas. With less than five percent of its residents sustaining pressure ulcers, it performed as well as any facility the nation in this category. This is generally a good indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can many times be prevented by offering better nursing care, such as having a system of moving residents more frequently.
Long-term Care Quality
This facility is also above average in the category of long-term care, where it was awarded a score of B+. It outpaced most nursing homes in this area. When nursing homes receive this type of grade in this category it is a good sign for patient care and suggests that the place is well-staffed with nurses aids. Once we finished looking at the volume of nursing care, we then analyzed the nursing home's vaccination data. This facility vaccinated 100 percent of its patients against pneumonia, which is very impressive. Pneumonia tragically can be a dangerous illness for nursing home patients so we prefer when a facility does not leave its residents vulnerable. The last datapoint we looked at was the facility's hospitalization rate. Here we found that this nursing home had 3.04 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days. While this admittedly wasn't as impressive as some of its other scores in this area, this number may be skewed for some nursing homes due to the preexisting medical conditions of residents.
Short-term Care Quality
Switching gears to the next category, this facility was awarded a very strong short-term care score. Even though this is not quite as impressive as a few of its other category grades, this is still one of the more impressive scores we offer. Our short-term care ratings are critical for people seeking rehabilitation. Rehabilitation usually requires higher levels of highly-skilled nursing. This means a vast range of services, spanning from registered nurses to physical and speech therapists, as well as other types of therapy. When we assessed this facility's nursing hours, we found it offered substantially more care from registered nurses than most nursing homes. Finally, we assessed the number of patients who were able to return to the community from this facility. We found that 42.4 percent of this nursing home's residents returned home.
