Facility Inspections
While we were not complementary of this nursing home's overall performance, it actually received an impressive inspection report this year with few dings from the applicable government inspectors. As a result, it received one of our better grades in that area with a grade of B+. Our inspection scores weigh a host of factors found on a nursing home's inspection reports. One of the most important criteria we rely on is the number and severity of deficiencies. You generally want to avoid facilities with a bunch of deficiencies flagged. Although this place had some deficiencies on its report, none of them were major deficiencies based on CMS' scale. A couple minor deficiencies aren't necessarily the end of the world.
Long-term Care Quality
This nursing home's second best category was long-term care. In that category, we awarded this nursing home a B-. Long-term care grades are typically used to grade a facility's performance as a traditional nursing home, as opposed to focusing on the skilled nursing services provided by a skilled nursing facility. Once we assessed the quantity of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we next considered the facility's vaccination statistics. We were a bit alarmed this nursing home vaccinated 68.77637 percent of its residents against pneumonia, which is significantly less than the national average. Fortunately, this nursing home was able to limit hospitalizations. In fact, it had only 0.03 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low figure.

Nurse Quality
Turning to the area of nursing care, this facility received a grade of just D in this category. There are a host of criteria included in this area. Many of these criteria are tied to the quantity and quality of nurse staffing. With just 0.3 hours of nursing care per patient per day, this nursing home's nurse staffing levels were quite a bit below average. Finally, we also looked at some nursing quality-based metrics in determining our nursing scores. This facility performed well in terms of minimizing its residents' major falls and pressure ulcers.
Short-term Care Quality
The final area we graded is short-term care. This nursing home received a bottom of the barrel grade of F in that category. In calculating our short-term care scores, we look at a nursing home's levels of highly skilled nursing, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists occupational therapists and other highly trained professionals. This score is considered to be a reliable measure of the nursing home's rehabilitation services. Not surprisingly, we found that this nursing home provides far less physical therapist and registered nurse hours per resident than the average facility. The final statistic we considered in this category is the number of patients who were able to leave the facility and return to the community. We discovered that just 3.8 percent of this facility's residents were able to return home, which is well below average. The combination of these poor metrics doomed this facility's short-term care score.
