Facility Inspections
On top of faring well overall, this nursing home received a nearly flawless inspection report. Consequently, it received one of our best scores in that area with an A+. Inspection ratings are based on pieces of information found on the a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Places that score well in this area have very few deficiencies on their reports. Most importantly, these nursing homes generally do not have any severe deficiencies which are associated with risks to patient safety. Although this place had a few deficiencies on its report, none of them were major deficiencies based on CMS' deficiency scale. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Short-term Care Quality
This nursing home received strong grades in the category of short-term care as well. Consequently, we awarded it one of our highest grades in that area with a area of A-. Short-term care scores are critical for individuals needing rehabilitation. Rehabilitation generally mandates more highly-skilled nursing services. Skilled nursing means a wide range of nursing services, spanning from registered nurses to physical and respiratory therapists, as well as other variations of therapy. Fortunately, this nursing home offers both physical therapists and registered nurses. Not all facilities offer both. The final item we looked at in this category is the percentage of patients who were able to leave the facility and return to the community. We found that it performed as well as just about any facility in Arizona in this area with 68.3 percent of its residents returning home. Unfortunately, at most nursing homes, fewer than half of their short-stay residents are able to return home.
Long-term Care Quality
This nursing home also was given an impressive long-term care grade. In fact, we awarded it an above average grade of B+ in this category. When nursing homes receive a score in this range in long-term care it generally means it's well-staffed and is a quality place to live on a permanent basis. Once we concluded our assessment of the amount of care provided by nurses, we next considered the facility's vaccination statistics. This facility vaccinated 100 percent of its residents against pneumonia, which is an impressive figure. Pneumonia is often a life or death ailment for nursing home residents so we strongly prefer when a nursing home does not leave this to chance. Lastly, this nursing home was able to limit hospitalizations. It had only 0 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low number.
Nurse Quality
The final area we scored was nursing, was this nursing home's worst category. We awarded this nursing home a grade of D in this category. This is one of the couple of dings of a quality profile. When computing a facility's nursing grade, we consider the number of hours nurses are seeing patients as well as the levels of training of those nurses. This particular nursing home provided 3.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day, which is below average. Although this facility didn't excel in nursing hours, it surprised us in a few of the quality-based assessments in the nursing category, such as avoiding serious falls. This nursing home was better than average in this statistic, which was one redeeming quality we found in this category.
