Short-term Care Quality

Grade: A-plus

On top of performing well overall, this nursing home received high marks for short-term care as well. As a result, it received our highest grade in that category with a score of A+. In the area of short-term care, we strive to assess indicators of a facility's rehabilitation services. We analyze a facility's skilled nursing services, including the ones performed by registered nurses and various therapists. Fortunately, it appear that this facility employs registered nurses. Not all facilities employs these types of nurses. On the other hand, according to the data they provided, they do not appear to employ physical therapists. Finally, we considered the percentage of residents who eventually returned home from this nursing home. We found that 6.5 percent of this nursing home's patients were able to return home.

Facility Inspections

Grade: A

Adding to this facility's impressive resume, we awarded this nursing home a grade of A for our inspections rating. Inspection ratings weigh a host of factors included in a nursing home's inspection reports. One key criteria we look at is the number and severity of deficiencies. Facilities with better grades in this category generally have few of these severe deficiencies. This particular nursing home had just a single deficiency on its inspection report and it was not one deemed to pose a threat to patient health or safety. Even some of the best nursing homes receive an occasional ding on their inspection report.

Nurse Quality

Grade: A-minus

To complement its strong performance in other areas, we awarded this nursing home a grade of A for our inspections rating. The nursing grade is based on quite a few subcategories, many of which are based on levels of nurse staffing. This nursing home provides 0.5 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, we also assessed several nursing quality measures and this nursing home excelled in some of these areas. With less than five percent of its residents sustaining pressure ulcers, it performed as well as any facility Rhode Island in this category. This is generally a good indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can frequently be avoided by offering better nursing care, such as employing a system of turning a resident more often.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: B

The final area we assessed was long-term care. We gave this facility one of our better scores in this category, with a B. Even though this is not on par with some of its other scores, it is nevertheless a positive score. In a long-term care environment, the primary goal is to maintain patients' quality of life and keep them safe. On top of looking at the volume of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we analyzed the percentage of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This nursing home vaccinated 92.15686 percent of its patients. This is a few points lower than we were hoping for but still a decent percentage. Clearly, this place is doing something right in this area as it also excelled at keeping its residents out of the hospital. It had only 0.01 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is an impressively low figure.
