Facility Inspections
This facility received a solid overall grade as described above, but we really wanted to point out its excellent government inspections in recent years. We awarded them an impressive grade of A in this category. Perhaps the most critical factor we consider in determining our inspection scores is deficiencies. Deficiencies are found on a facility's inspection reports. Places with higher scores in this category typically dodged the most severe deficiencies involving patient abuse or death. Fortunately, although this place had a few minor dings on its inspection report, it had zero severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are found in categories G, H, I, J, K and L. This tells you that the inspectors did not deem any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient safety or health. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Long-term Care Quality
This facility also received an impressive score in our long-term care category. We awarded this facility a better than average grade of B+ in this area. When facilities receive this type of grade in this category it is typically a good sign for patient care and suggests that the facility is well-staffed with nurses and aids. One of the factors we considered in addition to nurse's aid hours is vaccinations. This nursing home administered the pneumonia vaccination to 96.15385 percent of its residents. Vaccination is a proven method to avoid unnecessary hospitalizations for the elderly population. Finally, this place was able to limit hospitalizations. In fact, it had less than one hospitalization per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low number.
Nurse Quality
This nursing home's next best category was nursing. We awarded it a grade of C in this category. This is basically a middle of the road grade in this category. The nursing rating is based on many factors, most of which are associated with nursing hours. This facility provided just 3.2 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is a relatively low total compared to most other facilities. In addition to ranking poorly in terms of nursing hours offered, this nursing home also lagged behind in certain datapoints that focus on quality of care. This facility's nursing score was hurt by poor performance in the area of minimizing pressure ulcers. In fact, we found that 24.5 percent of this nursing home's patients experienced pressure ulcers. This is more than double the national average. Since many pressure ulcers can be avoided with proper nursing protocols, we reduce a facility's nursing grade when we find this kind of prevalence of pressure ulcers.
Short-term Care Quality
The next area we scored was short-term care. We awarded this facility a C in this area. Short-term care grades are commonly used to score a nursing home's performance with rehabilitation. To offer highly graded rehabilitation services, facilities generally must have higher levels of skilled nursing. These types of services include registered nurses, physical therapists, speech therapists and other licensed professionals. Fortunately, it appear that this facility has registered nurses on staff. Not all facilities employs these types of nurses. However, according to the information they provided, it does not look like the facility employs physical therapists. The last statistic we assessed in this area is the number of residents who were able to return home from the nursing home. We found that just 0 percent of this facility's patients returned home. This figure was below the national average.
