Facility Inspections
In addition to being a respectable facility overall, this facility really excelled in the area of inspections, where it received an A+. Few nursing homes performed better in this category. We weigh several aspects of a nursing home's inspection report in determining these inspection scores. One of those factors is health deficiencies. You should keep in mind that the severity of these deficiencies is arguably more important than the number of deficiencies, as some of these are quite insignificant. This particular nursing home had just a single deficiency on its inspection report and it was not one deemed to pose a threat to patient health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Long-term Care Quality
Turning to the area of long-term care, we awarded this facility a score of A in that category. Facilities that excel in long-term care typically provide residents with better supervision and stay on top of routine healthcare services. In addition to assessing the quantity of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we analyzed the percentage of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This nursing home administered the vaccine to 100 percent of its residents, which is what we like to see. Pneumonia sadly can be a dangerous condition for nursing home patients so we strongly prefer when a nursing home does not roll the dice on this issue. Lastly, this facility was able to limit hospitalizations. With only 1.63 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, this nursing home had fewer hospitalizations than the majority of nursing homes.
Nurse Quality
Next, we looked at the nursing category where we gave this nursing home an F. This is certainly not one of this facility's better areas. In computing our nursing scores, we look at both staffing levels and the levels of licensure of those nurses. This nursing home provides 3.5 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is slightly below average. On top of its below average nursing hours, this place earned poor scores in some of the quality-based metrics we looked at in computing our nursing scores. We found that a higher percentage of this place's patients suffered falls leading to serious injury. We would argue that many falls could be avoided with better nursing care. This metric contributed to this place receiving a poor nursing grade.
Short-term Care Quality
This nursing home's least impressive area was short-term care, which is the final area we analyzed. Sadly, it received an abysmal F for this category. Despite several respectable grades in other areas, this grade is nevertheless disappointing so we would like to to make sure you are aware. In the area of short-term care, we endeavor to assess measures of a facility's rehabilitation. We analyze the nursing home's skilled nursing services, such as those performed by registered nurses and physical, occupational and other therapists. Unfortunately, this nursing home was below average in terms of its quantity of physical therapy and registered nurse hours provided to its residents based on the measures we assessed. The last datapoint we looked at in this category is the number of patients who were able to return home from the facility. This nursing home struggled quite a bit in this metric as well, with just 27.5 percent of its residents returning home. Unfortunately, this was well below the national average.
