Facility Inspections
While this facility's overall grade was not bad, it really fared well in the category of inspections. In fact, we awarded it a grade of A- for that category, which is one of our highest scores. Inspection ratings weigh several factors, including deficiencies and substantiated complaints. You can find more information about each of these items by obtaining copies of nursing homes' inspection reports. While this facility had a few deficiencies on its inspection report, none of them were serious based on CMS' deficiency scale. The fact that none of the deficiencies were severe leaves us less concerned with this inspection report.
Long-term Care Quality
Another one of this facility's better category scores was in the area of long-term care. In that category, we awarded this nursing home a B. It actually fared better than most nursing homes in this area. When facilities receive a grade in this range in long-term care it typically means it's well-staffed and is a quality place to reside on a permanent basis. Once we finished looking at the volume of nursing care, we next considered the nursing home's vaccination statistics. This facility vaccinated 98.65229 percent of its patients against pneumonia, which is very impressive. Pneumonia sadly can be a deadly health condition for nursing home patients so we like it when a facility doesn't leave this to chance. Finally, we looked at its number of hospitalizations. With 1.79 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, this place was close to average in this area.
Nurse Quality
Another reason we rated this nursing home so highly is that it earned an A+ nursing rating. Our nursing category consists of many components, many of which are based on nursing hours. This particular nursing home provided 3 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, we also assessed several nursing quality measures and this facility excelled in some of these areas. With less than five percent of its residents sustaining pressure ulcers, it performed as well as any place the state in this category. This is generally a good indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can generally be prevented by offering better nursing care, such as employing a protocol of turning residents more frequently.
Short-term Care Quality
The final area we looked at was short-term care. It received a lowly F in this area, which is a bottom of the barrel score. This is clearly a significant concern. Short-term care grades are typically used to grade a nursing home's rehabilitation services. To have highly rated rehabilitation services, facilities generally need to provide better levels of highly skilled nursing. Skilled nursing includes registered nurses, physical therapists, speech therapists and other licensed professionals. Unfortunately, this nursing home was below average in terms of its quantity of physical therapy and registered nurse hours provided to its residents based on the measures we assessed. Lastly, we looked at the percentage of residents who were able to return home from this facility. This facility didn't fare well here either. In fact, we found that just 29.7 percent of this facility's residents were able to return home. This figure was quite a bit off the national average.
