Short-term Care Quality
One of the reasons this turned out to be a quality facility is that it received a very impressive short-term care grade. In fact, short-term care turned out to be its best category. In that area, we gave this facility an A. In calculating these short-term care ratings, we quantify the facility's skilled nursing services, such as those performed by registered nurses, speech therapists, physical therapists and other types of therapists. The purpose is to devise a tool for comparing the rehabilitation services of nursing homes. When we assessed this facility's nursing hours, we found it offered more care from registered nurses than most nursing homes. Finally, we looked at the percentage of residents who were able to return to the community from this nursing home. This place outperformed the vast majority of facilities in the country in this area with 58.5 percent of its patients returning home. This is a substantially better rate than most nursing homes.
Nurse Quality
One of the other reasons we rated this facility so highly is that it earned a very impressive nursing rating. In fact, nursing proved to be its second best category grade. In that category, we awarded this nursing home an A-. Nursing scores are heavily correlated with quality and quantity of nursing care. This particular facility provided 5 hours of nursing care per resident daily. This was one of the better figures we found. Furthermore, a significant percentage of this care was provided by registered nurses, which are highly skilled nurses. These are both really impressive figures. In addition to looking at levels of nursing care, we also looked at a few quality-based metrics in determining our nursing grades. These include minimizing residents' pressure ulcers and major falls. We look at these areas as good indicators of the quality of nursing care being provided, since better care tends to reduce these problems.
Facility Inspections
In addition, this nursing home also earned top notch government inspections in recent years. We awarded them one of our better scores in that area, with an impressive grade of B+. Inspection ratings weigh a host of factors found on a facility's inspection report. One key criteria we look at is the number and severity of deficiencies. Places with higher scores in this category tend to have few severe deficiencies. While this place had a few minor dings on its government inspection report, it had zero severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are those found in categories G through L. This means the inspectors didn't consider any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient health or safety. Keep in mind that deficiency-free inspection reports are uncommon in the industry.
Long-term Care Quality
The next category we assessed is long-term care. We gave this nursing home a decent grade in that area, with a grade of C. Although this wasn't as high as many of its other grades, it is still a middle of the pack score. For prospective residents seeking a permanent residence rather than skilled nursing, long-term care grades are very important. In addition to offering favorable levels of nursing care and other staffing, this nursing home administered the pneumonia vaccine to 97.41698 percent of its residents. This statistic is better than the majority of nursing homes. Lastly, we looked at the facility's number of hospitalizations. Here we found that this facility had 2.08 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days. Unfortunately, this figure was less impressive than its other scores in the long-term care area.
