Short-term Care Quality
In addition to receiving a great overall grade, this facility also received A+ short-term care grade. In the category of short-term care, we attempt to assess measures of a nursing home's rehabilitation services. We analyze a facility's skilled nursing services, including the ones performed by registered nurses and physical therapists. This nursing home provided more physical therapist and registered nurse hours per resident than most facilities. This is what we like to find when assessing a nursing home in this category. The final statistic we looked at in this category is the percentage of residents who were able to leave the nursing home and return to the community. We found that it performed as well as just about any nursing home in Wisconsin in this area with 66.3 percent of its residents returning home.
Facility Inspections
Adding to this facility's impressive resume, we awarded this facility a grade of A- for inspections. We weigh several aspects of a nursing home's inspection report in determining these inspection grades. One of those factors is deficiencies. It should be noted that the severity of the deficiencies is arguably more meaningful than the number of deficiencies, as some deficiencies end up being relatively insignificant. This particular nursing home had just a single deficiency on its inspection report and it was not one deemed to pose a threat to patient health or safety. Even some of the best nursing homes receive an occasional ding on their inspection report.
Nurse Quality
This nursing home also received a very impressive nursing grade. In that area, we awarded this facility a grade of A-. There are a variety of datapoints included in this grade. Many of these criteria reflect the quantity and quality of nurse staffing. This facility boasts a really impressive 4.2 hours of nursing care per patient per day, of which a significant percentage was provided by registered nurses. This is one of the more highly trained levels of nurses. This is one of the higher totals of nursing hours we found at any facility. On top of providing high levels of care, this place also performed well in several of the quality-based metrics we assessed. By way of illustration, in terms of the percentage of its residents suffering falls resulting in major injury, this facility performed as well as any facility the country. Preventing serious falls is typically an indicator that a facility has reliable quality controls in place. Major falls can frequently be prevented if more nurses and better safety protocols are employed.
Long-term Care Quality
The final category we graded is long-term care, where this nursing home was given a C. Although this turned out to be its lowest category rating, this is still not a terrible score. If you are seeking anything other than short-term rehabilitation, you should take a close look at each facility's long-term care ratings. One of the statistics we considered in addition to this nursing home's above average nursing hours was vaccinations. This nursing home provided the pneumonia vaccine to 100 percent of its residents. This is a great way to minimize unnecessary hospitalizations for the senior population. Lastly, this facility was able to limit hospitalizations. Although it had 1.76 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, its risk adjusted score was better than most nursing homes due to it having some more complicated patients.
