One of the many reasons this turned out to be a great nursing home is that it received an A+ long-term care grade. This is simply as good as it gets in this category. Facilities that excel in this category tend to be well-staffed and offer extensive hands on care to residents. Once we concluded our assessment of the volume of nursing care, we then looked at the facility's vaccination data. This facility vaccinated 100 percent of its residents for pneumonia, which is what we like to see. Pneumonia is too frequently a dangerous ailment for nursing home residents so we like it when a facility doesn't roll the dice on this issue. Clearly, this facility is doing something right in this area as it was able to keep its residents out of the hospital. Indeed, it had less than one hospitalization per one thousand long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low number.

This nursing home has earned near flawless health inspections recently. We awarded them an A in this area. Inspection grades weigh several factors, including deficiencies and federal fines. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.

The nursing score includes quite a few datapoints, many of which are based on nursing hours. This nursing home provides 0 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Lastly, we also assessed some nursing quality-based metrics in determining our nursing grades. This place performed very well in terms of avoiding pressure ulcers and major falls. We consider these areas to be good indicators of the quality of nursing care.

In the last category, this nursing home also was awarded a first-rate short-term care rating, with a grade of A. This completed an elusive straight A profile. Our short-term care scores are presumably more meaningful for those needing rehabilitation from their nursing home. Rehabilitation typically mandates additional highly-skilled nursing. Skilled nursing means not just nursing services, but also physical and respiratory therapy, as well as other forms of therapy. It does not appear that this nursing home provided information on registered nurse or physical therapist staffing. Finally, we looked at the number of patients who ultimately returned home from this nursing home. We found that 5.8 percent of this nursing home's residents returned home.
