Long-term Care Quality

Grade: A-plus

One of the reasons this proved to be a strong facility is that it earned a very impressive long-term care grade. In fact, long-term care is its best grade. In that area, we awarded this facility an A+. Facilities that excel in this category typically are well-staffed and offer extensive hands on care to residents. In addition to looking at the amount of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we looked at the percentage of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This nursing home administered the vaccine to 100 percent of its residents, which is what we like to see. Pneumonia is too frequently a life threatening ailment for nursing home residents so we prefer when a facility does not roll the dice on this issue. Clearly, this facility is doing something right in this area as it was able to keep its residents out of the hospital. Indeed, it had less than one hospitalization per one thousand long-term resident days, which is an impressively low figure.

Facility Inspections

Grade: A

In addition, this nursing home also performed well in our inspection category, which is based on the facility's inspection reports. In fact, we awarded it an A for that area, which is one of our best grades. Our inspection scores weigh several factors found on a nursing home's inspection report. One of the most important criteria we look at is the number and severity of deficiencies. Nursing homes with higher scores in this category tend to have few of these severe deficiencies. Although this nursing home had some deficiencies on its inspection report, none of them were serious based on CMS' scale. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.

Nurse Quality

Grade: C

Next, we looked at the nursing category where we awarded this nursing home a grade of C. This facility didn't perform quite as well in this category as it did in some other categories. Nevertheless, this is still a respectable score. Our nursing score is largely tied to the nursing home's nurse staffing. This nursing home provides only 0.3 hours of nursing care per patient on a daily basis. This is a somewhat discouraging figure as it is well below the national average. Despite having low quantities of nursing care, this facility surprisingly excelled in some of the quality measures we assessed. It performed well in terms of avoiding pressure ulcers and major falls. We consider these areas to be reliable measures of the quality of nursing care. In many cases, the quality of nursing care is as important as the quantity of hours of care provided.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: F

The final category we scored is short-term care. We gave it an abysmal F in this area, which is a bottom of the barrel score. You should not simply dismiss a nursing home as a result of a single terrible grade though. In calculating our short-term care scores, we look at the nursing home's levels of skilled nursing services, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists respiratory therapists and other highly trained professionals. This rating is generally a fair assessment of the nursing home's rehabilitation services. We found that this facility was subpar in the two key staffing metrics we looked at. In fact, it offered fewer registered nurse and physical therapist hours per patient than most other nursing homes. The final measure we assessed in this category is the percentage of patients that ultimately returned home from the nursing home. This facility struggled quite a bit in this area as well, with just 3.6 percent of its residents returning home.
